Paul Scoones@http://paulscoones.blogspot.com wrote:
This is the burning question for many Doctor Who fans right now, mere days away from the broadcast of the new episode due to screen in the UK on Christmas day.

The Christmas special, entitled The Next Doctor, features David Tennant's Doctor encountering another individual also calling himself the Doctor, played by David Morrissey (and thus reuniting the two Davids, who were previously seen together on screen in the wonderful Blackpool mini-series).

A brief preview clip from the story (which I'm assuming is the entire pre-credits sequence) screened as a fundraiser for the Children in Need charity appeal a couple of months ago, showing the Doctor's initial encounter with this other Doctor.

But is Morrissey really the Doctor...? The BBC isn't saying - and speculation is especially rampant in light of the recent news that David Tennant is stepping down from the role in 2010. Despite intense media speculation, his successor has yet to be announced, and it's likely that any casting revelation is deliberately being held back until sometime after the screening of The Next Doctor, in order to maintain the air of mystery and anticipation surrounding this episode. There doesn't seem to be likely though that David Morrissey will take over from David Tennant as the new star of the series as the episode was recorded many months ago, long before Tennant announced that he was leaving.

So assuming that this is a one-off role for Morrissey as the Doctor, it seems to me, based on the preview clip - and absolutely no insider knowledge - that there are four possible scenarios regarding the question of the Next Doctor's identity:

1) The Imposter Doctor: He’s someone else, a con-man knowingly masquerading as the Doctor for some reason. This would appear to be the most obvious answer, were it not for the fact that in that preview clip the Next Doctor doesn't seem to recognise the Doctor as anyone special, at least initially treating him as an ordinary bystander. He mentions the TARDIS to his companion, Rosita, has his own sonic screwdriver, and appears to be aware of the Cybermen. If he's a ordinary guy pretending to be the Doctor, he's rather too convincing. So I don't think this is the most likely scenario.

2) The Arch Doctor: He’s someone else, but genuinely believes himself to be the Doctor, having been exposed to the Doctor’s memories. There’s a precedent for this in Series Three when the Doctor used the chameleon arch to place his memories and personality inside a fob watch (in the episodes Human Nature / Family of Blood), and when this watch found its way into the possession of a human school boy, Tim Latimer, his limited exposure to the watch provides him with some of the Doctor’s memories. What if the Next Doctor has one of these watches and has had his mind altered so that he thinks and behaves as if he really is the Doctor? It’s a theory given weight by a couple of advance publicity photos, which shows the Next Doctor with a fob watch. If this is the case though, where does he get his TARDIS (the one he mentions to Rosita), from…?

3) The Rift Doctor: He really is the Doctor, but from an alternate universe. The presence of the new series version of the Cybermen in this story makes this scenario all the more plausible. The Cybermen originated in a parallel reality and crossed over into ‘our’ world through the rift. In the previous story, The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End, the walls between dimensions broke down, enabling Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler to return to our world from where they had been sealed off in an alternate reality. What if the Next Doctor is from that reality (or another one), and has come through the rift with the Cybermen? I’m favouring this scenario being the mostly likely one, but there’s another to consider…

4) The Real Doctor: He is actually the Doctor. Not someone pretending, not transformed by a watch, and not from another reality. Well and truly the Next Doctor; the Eleventh Doctor, the one that the Tenth Doctor will one day regenerate into. This scenario is possible if, in the course of events in this story, the Doctor does something to change his future so that this Next Doctor is wiped from history and never comes into existence. It’s an appealing idea, but perhaps not the most likely outcome.

If I were a betting man my money would be resting on scenario #3, but anything’s possible. The answer may even turn out to be something I haven't even considered above. For some time in the lead-up to last year's Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned (AKA The One With Kylie Minogue), fans thought that the story was set in the past aboard the actual Titanic, rather than - as it transpired - a replica spacecraft version of the ship in the present day. So this wouldn't be the first time that we've been led to believe one outcome when the truth is something quite different...

Less than two weeks from now we'll know for certain. Can't wait!

Oh yes, see the trailer for the christmas special here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVT6LXK1KMA

Now, With the theories out of the way.

Personally I'm a big Dr Who fan, so can't wait to see who will fill the shoes of David Tennant.
God, I love that guy, I'm straight, but i was a woman (or Gay) i'd be over him like well, Crouton over Edgeworth ;P
I'm rather sad to see him go. (ps: my money is on theory nr. 3)

But really, what are your thoughts about this? sad? happy? ecstatic?
Got some theories of your own? discuss!

Oh, Doctor Who! I forgot about the Christmas special! Damn the busy school timetable...

But anyway, I am a pretty big Dr Who fan as it happens. And I'm kinda sad that David Tennant is leaving. He acted so well! I really don't think anyone is going to be as good as he was...Okay, maybe I'm being a little one-minded here, but change and me are not the best of friends. I'll just have to wait and see if this new Doctor is as good... (oh, and I think number 3 is the most likely too ^^).

It's always possible he's the 12th/13th Doctor. But I'm quite inclined to think it's the third one, myself.

Yeah, from that trailer, I doubt that's the new Doctor, but an imposter. I think a later Doctor would have recognized a past one, and look at that screwdriver. It's literally a screwdriver, not a sonic one.

Yeah, to be honest, why wouldn't you recognise yourself from the past? It's not as if he's got to recognise himself as a child or anything...

Plus, he must have searched for himself on wikipedia at some point.

Well, it was mentioned by the actor portraying the "new doctor" , that the character suffers from some sort of amnesia and has a tragic past.
Too vague imo, but it raises a few questions.

I'm favouring number three too, it seems the most sensible option of the four.
The amnesia wouldn't affect that, though. So it could be anything, really.

If it turns out that he IS the Eleventh Doctor, which I think is rather unlikely, there'll only be two more regenerations left. (NOOooooo....)

It's possible that he's the 11th/12th/13th Doctor from the Meta-Crisis Doctor from the Series Four Finale. Or he could be an in-between regenerations like Valeyard (?) from the old series :yuusaku:

It's very unlikely, since the Meta-Crisis Doctor can't regenerate.
Oh wait, this is Doctor Who, we're talking about. It could happen, then.
If it turns out that it is the MCD regeneration I'm suing the BBC for advertising under false pretences. :P

That's it, no more speculation for me. *counts down to The Next Doctor*

Nope, Meta-crisis doctor Is half human, One heart, No regeneration and he ages like a Human.
Besides, even if it was possible, He'd still remember "the other one"

However, Perhaps the original doctor from that alternate universe?

According to the TV section of 'the Sun' newspaper, the Doctor replacing Tennant is heavily rumoured to be a woman of an ethnic background, or so some insider says. I disbelive this idea.
that may indeed mean Morriseys doctor will be the 12th / 13th doctor.

Also in one of the earlier episodes (i.e before revival) someone hints that the Hartnell doctor may not actually be the original incarnation of the doctor ( I think the Master says that, mabye the anthony ainley one). Read it on wikipedia.

In the fourth doctor episodes with the Brain of Morbius, when they are having the mind battle it shows different faces on the machine, Going backwards from Tom Baker. After it reaches Hartnell, it goes through six (I think?) more faces which I assume are previous incarnations of him. This would have made Sylvester McCoy the 13th and allegedly final Doctor.

So, they've already solved that problem then.

You know they're going to break the law of 13 regens max, though. Because there is ALWAYS a way around things in Sci Fi TV.

Because the Cybermen are back. And they're dead. So, it's a certainty.

It turns out we were all wrong.
As much as Morrisey was good in this episode, I'm actually quite glad he isn't the next doctor.
I can't imagine watching him for the next several years. o_o

I'm really irritated.

It was a good RTD episode.

That's impossible.

I thought the cyber dogs were a bit tacky though. And I didn't think much of the final confrontation...

Oh well, it was a fairly enjoyable episode, although I'd agree with Logic sword on the tackiness of the cyber dog things.

I know what you mean, it all seemed rather rushed to me, no background info on certain things, etc.
But all-in all a pretty good ep.

Now, guess we'l have to wait a while longer to find out who the next Doctor will be...

Midnight was one of the dullest episodes of Doctor Who I've watched.

The official 11th Doctor is.....Matt Smith? I have never heard of him here in America. Anybody know him? He doesn't seem to have any eyebrows, which kinda creeps me out. He's only 26.

I've never heard of the guy until I saw the Doctor Who: Confidential programme last night.

He's got a heck of a job to do filling in as the Doctor now (after the fantastic acting skills of David Tennant) so I'd say "Good Luck" to the guy. He can't slip up, I mean after all, we are talking about one of the most well-known and adored shows on television here, he'd need to up his game.

But I'll give him a chance, I hope he does a good job as the Doctor though.

Personally, I'd have liked David Morissey to have been the new Doctor, considering his performance in the christmas special.....

As for the new Doctor, Matt Smith, I'm not too happy about his appointment to be honest (but then I thought that about Tennant, and he turned out to be great, so...).

So, for now I'll reserve judgement for Matt Smith, until I've seen him in action.

I have the same feelings as most of you guys, he doesn't look great for the part, but the crew must have seen something in him. We'll be seeing him in action sometime 2010, so it'll be a while.
