:D Because I, personally, love the works of Studio Ghibli and film genius Hayao Miyazaki.

And, because I have absolutely no life, I'm seeking out fellow fans. Buahaha.

I suppose I'll start off by saying my favorites. Castle in the Sky is definitely my favorite movie; I've loved it since I was eight. Favorite male; Pazu, of course. Favorite female; Nausicaä (the only one capable of doing anything besides screaming and whining and being generally obnoxious), although Fio from Porco Rosso was pretty badass too.

So come on. I can't possibly be the only one who adores Ghibli stuff ;D

The fact that you have a Tobaye signature and you posted this topic makes me love you.

Yeah, Howl's Moving Castle and possibly The Cat Returns (is that one? Meh...) are my favourites.

Yeah I love Studio Ghibli! The first film I saw was Spirited Away which was on TV, and from then on I kept an eye out for them in the shops. I'm slowly getting a collection of them now, including:

Laputa:Castle in the Sky
Princess Mononke
Kiki's Delivery Service

Plus a couple others. I may try and get all of them. Spirited Away has to be my favourite of all the ones I've bought, it brought me to Studio Ghibli <3

Oh yeah, I love them. <3

In fact, I was watching Porco Rosso a few hours ago on Film4.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are definitely my favourites.
Like Fooly, Spirited Away was my first Ghibli film. :3

Fan here! Spirited Away was my first Ghibli film, but my fave would probably be either Nausicaa or Howl's Moving Castle. Oh, you know what I can't believe? I'm on a forum for fan edits of films, and there's actually a couple people there who hold that Warriors of the Wind (the massacred dub that made Hayao turn from having his films dubbed period) was a better film than Nausicaa! XD

Kiki's delivery Service was my first one, but I didn't know where it came from until later. Then, I got to see Caslte in the Sky (Wonderful), then Spirited Away (Incredible), Princess Mononoke (amazing), and Howl's Moving Castle (so great, my anime-hating family loves it), among others. I just can't wait until I can see Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea (man, that's a mouthful!).

Tales from Earthsea... was nice... but something was missing from it. I can't quite find the words for it, either.

Well, Earthsea wasn't actually done by Hayao Miyazaki; it was done by his son, Goro. I feel exactly the same; there was something different. Plus, the two main dubbing actors sucked majorly.

I just recently watched that one again and found myself liking it a great deal more than I did when I first saw it. Then again, I first saw it at 2 AM and thought I'd fallen asleep because the ending was so abrupt.

Regarding Miyazaki, Castle of Cagliostro was my favorite, even though I dislike the Lupin series.

Regarding Studio Ghibli, Grave of the Fireflies(non-Miyazaki), My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.

Whisper of the Heart
My Neighbors the Yamadas

Really? I'm pretty sure I saw that the first time shortly before you joined on the Old C-R...

Anyway, my first Ghibli film was Spirited Away, too. I believe the next one was My Neighbor Totoro. Anyway, as I said, love 'em, got me into anime.

I've seen/own:

Nausicaa Of the Valley of the Wind
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Porco Rosso
My Neighbour Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke (my favorite! :will)
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
The Cat Returns
& Tales From Earthsea.

Although not all the dubs are great, I like how they have some really famous actors/actresses as some of the characters like Patrick Stewart, Michael Keaton, Dakota Fanning, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Timothy Dalton & Willem Dafoe.

BTW, Castle in the Sky got me into Ghibli.

You know, I wasn't that big on Howl's either. I think that after Miyazaki started becoming really famous, his films sort of lost something. Freedom of expression, maybe. The animation itself was absolutely stunning, though.

Yeah... the animation was amazing, and it was fun to watch, but it would've been so much more enjoyable if the stuff made sense.

(Surprisingly, the thing that probably ticks me off the most is that Howl's hair color is his new hair color in the flashback instead of his old hair color... T_T)

XDD Haha, yeah; that was a bit odd. Plus, they never really explained his connection with the Witch of the Wastes, and the insight into Sophie's life was disappointingly minimal. :c

In terms of plot, the original book is much better (though I still love Miyazaki's version of it).

WERE YOU AWARE OF IT?

Were you aware that Miyazaki based that movie on the novel Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynn Jones?

WERE YOU EVEN AWARE OF THIS FACT?

WELL IT LOOKS LIKE I FOUND MY TOPIC! :D

I've been a huge Miyazaki/Ghibli fan for YEARS! ^_^ I had Kiki's Delivery Service when I was a little kid and loved it dearly. I was at a movie rental place when I was 8/9-ish and found a movie by the same guy called "Princess Mononoke". So rented it, unaware that it was rated PG-13 for a very good reason. So um.... *clears throat* yeah. Even though blood and limbs were flying, it was still amazing. After that I really started to get into Miyazaki and I saw "Spirited Away" in theaters.

<3

Anyway, "Howl's Moving Castle" is my favorite, but I still love them all dearly. But I don't have Porco Rosso. :C

And even though they aren't directed by Miyazaki, "Grave of the Fireflies" and "Whisper of the Heart" are INCREDIBLE.

Ghibli movies I own:
Kiki's Delivery Service
Castle in the Sky
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
My Neighbor Totoro
Howl's Moving Castle

Hey! Have you guys heard about Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea?

Apparently it's geared towards younger kids like "My Neighbor Totoro", but that won't stop me from getting it when it comes out this year~
Yes, even though there's going to be a CYRUS and a JONAS doing voices. D<

Ponyo looks adorable! 'cept for the Cyrus and Jonas stuff :C They make me wither inside.

Kiki was my favorite movie for YEARS. I watched it nonstop and was always trying to fly on this broom we had that looked exactly like the one she used at the end ;D I was such a dweeby child.

I personally think that Miyzaki's works are the pinnacle of anime, myself.

Whisper of the Heart is my favorite movie (of his, and one of my favorite in general). Has a lot of charm, and it is very sweet. A good coming-of-age movie that when I first saw it, I was convinced of his genius.

Porco Rosso is a fun movie, and I enjoy it a lot, considering the different style is had over Miyazaki's other stuff.

Castle in the Sky
is also very good; the villain is delightfully douche-y, and Miyazaki has a knack for story-telling that is almost unparalleled in animation.

I've seen Princess Mononoke, and my opinion is pretty much consensus that it is a phenomenal movie, and one of his best.

Spirited Away astounded me when I watched it. I was surprised that a movie could be so good (the other movies, I expected some level of excellence, and got it; however, this one floored me with its care and attention to detail). Loved the characters, thought No-Face was awesome, and think it deserves the praise it gets.

Howl's Moving Castle is all right, but it is definitely his weakest movie. He leaves way too many things unanswered, and some parts (like the lost-prince-turned-turnip-head) were overall just poorly executed. There wasn't a huge sense of urgency (Suliman, who was about as close to a villain as we got, aside from the Witch, did not really do anything to make me feel like she was the villain), and something about Sophie's voice seemed forced.

If I go on too long about the movie I didn't like (as much), that's because I can't really say a whole lot about the good movies, because there is not much that can be said without being repetitious and trite ( :godot: ).

Whisper of the Heart is my favorite, but I pretty much love all his movies.

Any one see PomPoko? That one is a bit more obscure...

Also, I hear a new Miyazaki movie might come out in the West this year. Can't wait.

I concur. Muska could, like, rule over a giant kingdom of douchebags. With a cat. :shoe:
FUN FACT: THE GUY WHO PLAYED MUSKA, MARK HAMMIL, ALSO PLAYED THE PEJITE GENERAL IN NAUSICAÄ.

Mononoke was indeed epic. I wasn't that happy about Claire Danes and Billy Crudup being casted, though. Not, of course, to say that they were bad - quite the opposite. I'm just not that enthusiastic about casting celebrity couples as couples in a movie. :yuusaku: It annoys me.

Pom Poko was great. It's all about the raccoon balls. <3

The new Ghibli movie coming out here is Tales from Earthsea, directed by Miyazaki's son, Goro. I bought a copy of it in London but can't watch it here (which sucks), but I got to watch it there, and it was absolutely magnificent. The animation itself nearly made me fall over. In a coma.

The one I hear about coming over in the States (or maybe West in general) is Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, and is "expected to hit the United States sometime in 2009"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponyo_on_t ... by_the_Sea

I know, wikipedia, but I think that can be somewhat reliable.

It looks really cool. Miyazaki did the hand-drawn animations himself? Now that should be something to sea (pun intended).

I always quite liked Sophie's voice in Howl's Moving Castle :P But I kinda feel the same as you too on the film. It's one of my least favourites, but I still like it.
As for Spirited Away, I love No Face, I like his weird nosies he makes. Man I love it so much, I want to watch it NOW. The witch scares me still sometimes though, she has a huuuge head.

I love Studio Ghibli to pieces. They're brilliant and Spirited Away is one of my favourite movies ever.

Honourable mentions go to Kiki's Special Delivery, The Cat Returns, Narcissa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and Whispers of the Heart. I actually cried at the ending of that last one, it was so sweet...

Okay, so since this topic is kinda dead, let's talk about something!
Who's your favorite hero? Who's your favorite heroine? Why? :3
And my boyfriend and I always talk about who's the most capable hero/heroine, so that's an option too... (personally, I think Nausicaä and Pazu are the most capable of the two genders.)

I own a few Ghibli titles but am terrible at getting around to watching them, that is the story of my life when it comes to both DVDs and computer games, I end up playing one or two alot and forgetting the rest.
