That...is pretty darn awesome, SF. It doesn't show up for me, but by opening it in a new window I could see it...yeah, that's cool ^^

Oh, by the way..

Happy Chinese New Year! :) 新年快乐!

Lunaria: Good to know we agree on how pesky hour-long breaks can be.

I think I have a few ideas in mind... the funny thing is that for this course we only have to write a 10-12 page term paper.. in fifteen weeks. This is going to be a piece of cake o_o''
The course is a China studies independent research course, and the topic is basically open-ended as long as it somehow relates to a field that my supervisor is knowledgeable in. I'm leaning towards something with gender in Chinese history/culture/undecided about the specifics yet since I am a gender studies major, after all (double-majored with psych).

My Psychology books were never too bad.. except for this psychology of language textbook last semester. It was a crappy textbook (even the professor said so) and I never studied from it yet got As on all the exams. >__>; What a waste of money.
This semester I'm not even taking any Psychology courses -- I finished the major. All I have left is to finish my gender studies major and my china studies minor.

Re: professors and quotes
That does sound quite annoying. I have tremendous faith in your abilities when/if you go to teach upper division literature. :D

Good luck with work! Your job sounds great. I've always wanted to be a teaching assistant but unfortunately the professors I would LOVE to TA for are either teaching classes I've never taken or they're only teaching graduate-level work this semester. :(
However, it's not so bad this semester. I will hardly have enough time to devote to TA'ing as is since I have my internship, research lab, and other responsibilities, but I still wish I could have a TA opportunity. (Even though I heard it can be annoying and lots of work!)

Fishy: It doesn't work but I took the URL from your post and opened it in a new tab. :)
And yes, you must familiarize yourself with the awesomeness of Portal.

OH, THAT REMINDS ME. THIS IS FOR ALL YOU PORTAL FANS:

I love her Katamari, Cooking Mama, Bioshock, Totoro, and Layton bentos. <3

Biblio: Haha, don't worry 'bout it. I'm not so good with the "keeping up with responses, especially with other threads" thing.

*Glares at Vicki* ...Those pictures have the cake in them. AND THE CAKE IS A LIE! How dare you lie to us...

But seriously, those were pretty good. A bit of a strange hobby, but that still takes mad skillz.

And love the latest artwork. LBP one is epic.

Thanks muchly Vicki! They're great.

And, on LBP, the text in my sig is ACTUALLY FROM THE GAME! NO JOKE! It's from one of the level creation tutorials. You're just watching the video, and the narrator says it and you just crack up!

Anyway, thanks again, and THE CAKE IS NOT A LIE, THE DELICIOUS CAKE IS A LIE.

The posionus cake however, is very real.

Indeed, I love how it's a unique hobby.. and something you can eat, as opposed to crochet or something you've knit. Well, you could, but it would just end up tasting like a whole bunch of yarn.

Percei: Haha, I must admit, I was a bit confused when you gave me the LBP text.
That's crazy that it actually comes from the game o__o;

Pishposh, my favorite cuisine is made of yarn! Eyelash when you're not hungry, bulky when you want substantial...and it's a great source of fiber! Or synthetic fibers, at least. But those bentos are absolutely wonderful! I kinda want one now ^^

I already said this over PM, but...
GAHHH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
These are so wonderful! <3

As for Mahoraba:
Spoiler: for length
Wiki says:
Shiratori Ryushi wants to become a picture book writer, and he moves to an apartment, Narutaki-Sou, in order to go to an art school in Tokyo. Narutaki-Sou is an old Japanese style one-story house which doesn't fit in urban scenery. The complex is owned by his mother's cousin and the manager of the apartment is his second cousin, Aoba Kozue. They met each other when they were children, although Shiratori doesn't remember much of it...Narutaki-Sou is filled with characteristic and eccentric people. However, the most eccentric person is Kozue herself. She has a secret of which even she does not know; when she is shocked at something, her personality changes. Not knowing this, Ryushi moves to Narutaki-Sou to realize his dream.
///
So, it's basically about the residents of Narutaki-Sou and their lives; their relationships with each other, so forth. It is also about Kozue-chan, and the results of her personality changes. It's just truly adorable. The drawing is cute, the characters are cute, the plot is cute...it's just a bundle of cuteness! It's really good...

And, just for good measure:
THANK YOOOOOU AGAIN.

Thanks, Balrog :)

As for updates, I finished DxK's signature and just need to complete the avatar part. I took a step in a different direction style-wise and color-wise because I love to experiment.

Biblio: I'm glad you like it :) Don't worry about the text - it wasn't a huge hassle, it just took some adjustments.
The anime sounds interesting.. yet another one to add to the list of "what to watch." @__@;

Text: Long brown hair and foolish eyes...

Some kind of slick, chrome American prince...
Image(s): Mia and Godot - {EDIT} Godot bold in the foreground, and Mia quite faded semi-behind him, probably facing the other way due to pictures :edgy:
Any preferred size?: Same as above
Color scheme: Both this and below up to you. Pretty mellow, I should think, not too crazy lol.
Extras? (hearts, stars, swirls, etc.):

I'll edit the original so it's easier to make a reference to :)

And....

ZOMG. Biblio's set was sexy.

Hello, Vicki! :Keko-hands: I see you're still cranking out masterpieces like always. And I wondered if perhaps you could please take the time, eventually, to make me a wallpaper? (yeah, the nerve of me, I know. Only requested two things and I'm already plowing on to ask for a wallpaper. :C For shame.)

It'd be lovely if you could. :3 I really adore your graphics and wouldn't ask anyone else. ^^
Ready? It's gonna be pretty specific. ^^; I'll try to keep it simple but will fail, probably.

Spoiler: For length
Text: (Okay, so it's going to be sort of like, these lines are going to be scattered around the picture, sort of faded, with one particular one in the middle.)
Middle Line: I'll become what you became to me.
Other lines: A thousand other boys could never reach you... how could I have been the one?
When you stand, they fall.
I go on as you get colder.
I saw the world spin beneath you and scatter like ice from the spoon that was your womb...
Baby's black balloon makes her fly... I almost fell into that hole in your life.
Image(s): Well... I'd like if there was one in the middle with the line of text over it, or under it, or whichever looks best.
This is the one I'd like to be in the middle: http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... 1433LG.jpg
And the others should be, like the text, sort of around the middle one... in the corners or the margins or whichever. Those are these ones:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... 1431LG.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... 0817LG.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... /noway.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... 1244LG.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... 0811LG.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... su1312.jpg
And finally, I'd like this one to be... sort of in the background, but still prominent? If you get what I mean? xD;
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/ ... 1429LG.jpg
Any preferred size?: 1280 x 800 o_O
Color scheme: Hmm... this I'm not sure about. Whatever you think looks best. (yeah, I know - the easy way out for the requester) BUT - I'd like all the images to be a bit faded except for the one in the middle.
Extras? (hearts, stars, swirls, etc.): It's completely impossible for me to even think of asking more after I just bombarded you with all that ridiculosity. :C

Gawd... I feel terrible for asking so much XD; It seems so... big. Take as long as you want on it, really. But if it seems like too much work, you can totally turn me down; I would completely understand.

Thank you SO MUCH for your time, Vicki! How have you been?

Sounds Fishy: Lurking is fine :] I do it all the time on LiveJournal.
Thanks a WHOLE BUNCH for editing the original, it makes it so much easier for me. I often only look at the original request post when I work on a request and it's entirely possible for me to forget if there was another post made afterwards with an edit... so imagine my frustration if I made a signature a certain way and then later realized that I had to scrap that work and make some big changes.

In short: THANK YOU! :)

I'm happy that Biblio's set is liked by all of you ^___^ (<3 to SF, yuzikichan, blinq) Truth be told, I was doubtful of the outcome and (at the time) somewhat disappointed with how it came out, but knowing that Biblio liked it a bunch lessened my "negativenancy" attitude. :B

Incendiary: Don't worry, I would love to make you a wallpaper :) I have really enjoyed making them recently, so you're just feeding my wallpaper-making addiction. :B YOU ENABLER, YOU.

Thanks for the loyalty ^___^ It's something I definitely value and really appreciate from others.
Please don't feel terrible - really, I've had people request much much more and who were not very polite at all. At least you're very well-mannered and patient, which is all I ask for. :)

Just one thing I want to clarify - can you doublecheck your screen resolution? I just want to make sure the wallpaper I'll be making is the right size for your monitor. If you have a PC, you can check by going to control panel -> appearance/personalization -> display settings or adjust screen resolution (it differs for XP vs. Vista so getting to display settings depends on your OS)

It'll say your resolution and then have a slider underneath it. :3
Thanks a bunch and sorry if it's a hassle ^__^;;

Okay, so here's a long explanation of what I tried to accomplish in this signature for anyone who's curious about my thought process.
DxK basically explained that the idea for this signature was to celebrate discovering something important about the self (btw, very well-deserving of a celebration!), so I wanted the fortune cookie to look like it was actually giving her fortune, luck, etc.
I wanted bright, happy colors because it made the most sense for this type of theme.
The text is parts of her post. The other texts are simple phases I typed up for additional motivation and inspiration.

For the avatar, the "crumbling" is something I tried to make into something literal, so it's my attempt at making it look like it is actually crumbling. It looks more obvious if the text was black but then the text would stick out too much.. etc. @__@;
Anyways, I like playing around with words, so it was fun to do. :)

I can't imagine people not being polite to you Vicki. I think your one of the nicest people on these forums. People on here generally seem to be nice too.

How are you classes going?

I had a fun night of reading and the reveiwing a story with six students. Everyone seemed well mannered and polite. I hope they keep coming to the review sessions. If no one comes, technically I could get paid to browse the forums, but I'm sure my supervisor would prefer me to do the job for which I was hired. I have to do a different story tomorrow, so I have some more reading ahead of me, but I will save it for tomorrow when my mind has had some rest.

Great job on the Avatar and Sig, by the way.

To start off this post pathetically, I have a question. What is the font that I see so often? Namely, the one you use generally for 'by Vickinator' and on affiliate buttons and such. I've been looking, but I can't find it. >.>

Pssshhh, of course I like it [my signature and avatar] bunches! I like it like bunches of...of...errrrrrrrr...chocolate chip cookies! :butzthumbs: Mmmmm...

... :sadshoe: Yeah, well...sorry, pal. I don't have any replies for you just yet...but...I do have a thank-you present!
Spoiler: thank you! ^^
Image
Sorry it's a bit big. I didn't know what size to make it, so I experimented. I'm also sorry for the random wind effect.
...I don't have an explanation for that. It just happened. And if I were slightly less tired, I'd resave it without the glowing text. Ach. D= Anyways, thankyouthankyouthankyou! You're such a lovely person and I'm honored to know you here. ^^ I hope to see you working here for many more years with me requesting all the while!

I'm sorry that I'm so late, Vicki. Anyway, I love the wallpaper. <3 Seriously, I find myself leaving my computer on even when I'm not using it just so that I can look at it. *Probably shouldn't be doing that. :P* Thank you so much.

Oh, and if you're interested, the characters in the fanart are Edge (the ninja) and Rydia (the green haired woman) from Final Fantasy IV. I'd highly recommend the game if you like RPGs.

Thanks again, Vicki. Your work is unmatched. :)

UPF Silkscreen. ^__^; Although I can see that "SPF Sunscreen" would make a whole lot of sense, amusingly so.

Mia: You replied via PM which is absolutely fine, so there is no need to apologize. :) You're very welcome; it was a very nice wallpaper to create. I don't often get such high quality art to work with (and graphics do depend largely on the quality of the image provided), so it was a treat.
Glad to know my efforts have resulted in using more electricity. XD
Yes, I need to finish FFIV. >___>;

Biblio: If you have any font questions in general, let me know. I'm not a know-it-all expert but I do pride myself on recognizing a variety of fonts. I'm typically amused when I see an overrated typeface used for a new restaurant (ex. the font "violation" is used for a local restaurant). I know, I'm quite weird.

Awww, thanks a bunch for the "thank you" gift. :)
You don't need to apologize for the wind effect, it keeps things interesting and is not used often. :B
You'rewelcomeyou'rewelcomeyou'rewelcome. You're a lovely person yourself, I'm glad to have met you since you've been a supersupporter for.. uh, a long time.
Yes, if Vickinet arrives you betcha you'll get some type of admin/supermod position.

Lunaria: Most of the rude people I encountered on other websites, so that explains it. I completely agree that the people on CR are, for the most part, extremely nice and well-mannered. I'm happy to have met so many friendly and nice people here :)

My classes are going well. Since I'm only taking three courses, one being independent research, it's not a challenging schedule. I decided on a research topic for China Studies..
Spoiler: spoilerized because it's about my lengthy term paper
I'll be writing about footbinding and will be doing tons of research on the history and reasons for the practice. I find it fascinating that for the most part past research has simply called it barbaric and horrible yet never attempted to unravel the complicated history of the practice or attempted to understand why it was done. Basically, it's easier to simply call the Chinese "barbaric" or "uncivilized" for doing that to the women yet there is no mention of the parallels made with high heels or corsets in Western cultures. Why did women go along with it? How did the fascination with the bound foot begin? Why was it accepted for over a thousand years? What are some popular misconceptions of the practice today?
These are the types of questions that should be asked, rather than saying WELL ALL THE CHINESE WERE OPPRESSIVE AND ALL MEN LIKED SMALL FEET. These types of generalizations, of course, are the types of statements I want to unravel with my research.

I'm glad to hear that you had a good night re: the review sessions. Yes, I'm sure your supervisor would prefer you to do the job as well, haha. I do often hear stories of how teaching assistants in my courses often get no one to visit during office hours so they're basically.. sitting there, bored. Must really be the life.

Thanks :) It's fun going into a different direction and trying out something new.

Incendiary: Awesome, you have the same resolution as me - trying the wallpaper on my own desktop before uploading it will be easy to do! 8)

Oh, I know what you mean re: guilt. XD

Teehee, a fish. How delightfully random.

If you have any font questions in general, let me know. I'm not a know-it-all expert but I do pride myself on recognizing a variety of fonts. I'm typically amused when I see an overrated typeface used for a new restaurant (ex. the font "violation" is used for a local restaurant). I know, I'm quite weird.
~~~
=D That's really cool, actually! I wish I could recognize more fonts. It's wonderful to have a comprehensive knowledge of something.
Awww, thanks a bunch for the "thank you" gift. :)
~~~
You're welcome ^^ If you can't tell already, I realllly like making people presents. >.>

Aww ^^ I'm glad to have met you as well. And I think it'll be a year in a few months :butzthumbs: =D Yay!
...and is it odd that when I read 'supermod' I think "SUUUPER-MOOOODDDD!" in the tune of "SUUUPERMAN!"
Thanks for telling me the font also! ^^

...And your paper sounds truly interesting! I want to read it when it's done ^^ You're certainly good at finding thought-provoking subjects! I had never thought of comparing and contrasting corsets and foot binding. Interesting, though, the different emotions provoked based on the situation--when you hear about corsets, you don't think of it much, but when you hear of footbinding you think it's cruel; then other similar devices (like the tribe in Africa where the ladies add rings to their neck, eventually permanently elongating their neck to the point where it breaks if the rings are removed; the more rings one has, the more beautiful the lady is considered) is just considered 'odd' or different. It's intriguing how one's concepts of other countries colors your ideas about their traditions!
and still no reply to your previous comments, I'm sorrryyyy!

That sounds far more interesting than the junior research paper I have to write. All juniors at my high school are required to write a lengthy research essay on a particular topic in order to pass English 11. This year the topic for non-AP classes is book controversies. I have to read the book Silas Marner by George Eliot (I wept because I didn't get East of Eden before another classmate) and write an 8-9 page paper on why it was banned, what the controversy was, et cetera. It's insufferably boring and agonizingly difficult, mostly because I can't find a damn thing on why my book was bad. Mr. Hughes says I got stuck with a really hard one - it figures. :C

That actually sounds like a project worthy of a much shorter paper. I had an eleventh grade English teacher named Mr. Hughes too. He was really weird and always late to our class.

Heh, inorite?
And what's even worse is that we have to write a separate JRP for History class too, just because the stupid teachers couldn't decide whether they liked the papers in MLA or Turabian format better, so they figured they'd make us write two papers, one for each format, so they could make up their damn minds.

I've neer had to write in that style before. In fact, I had never heard to Chicago Style refered to in that term before. I'm used to MLA and I know some of APA.

Sure thing! Just make sure you upload it to your own imagehost before you do, otherwise my account might go over the limit.

If you could just simply mention "it was made by the user Vickinator" when posting it on the forums, that's all I ask for. Thanks again for the publicity, haha. :D

Lunaria: I never heard of that style either o____o;;
Since I'm a psych major I have only worked extensively with APA format. I'm "eh" on MLA because the last time I used it was in high school.

Incendiary: That's so stupid that you have to write in two formats for the same paper. -__-;
Anyway, I wish you luck on that paper. Yes, high school assignments can be taxing and ... annoying.
Luckily, in my senior year of high school, I got to read Dracula and write a decent research paper on it, so it wasn't too bad. The smaller paper assignments, however, were brutal.

elias, incendiary, lunaria, biblio, yuzikichan: Thanks to you all for commenting about my paper topic! :) I'm happy that it seems interesting -- later in the semester I will be also making a poster presentation on my topic, so it's good to know now that it'll be interesting for others.

Yuziki: What was your topic last year?

Biblio: Haha, I love making things for people too. (.. if you couldn't tell by now.. yeah.)
Your theme would TOTALLY be the superman theme. How 'bout that?
Thanks - since most of my paper assignments are fairly open-ended, I'd rather write 20 pages on something I find fascinating and thought-provoking (as you said) rather than really struggle with even writing 8 pages on something.. boring.
Like, sheesh. Last semester we had to write only 15-20 pages and I ended up writing 30, so... you could tell I was passionate about the topic.

YOU TOTALLY HIT THE COMPARISONS ON THE HEAD
My professor actually brought up the neck custom as well! You and my professor are on the same wavelength, apparently. :)
But yes.. when you do research, you should always read with a critical perspective. Depending on the background and perspective of the author, they may have certain biases towards outside cultures or other perspectives. It's always good to be open-minded when doing research. One author may say yaddayadda while another author on the same topic says THERE IS NO YADDAYADDA, and so on.

Trabz: You weren't far off at all, so don't worry about it. :)

My first week of this semester was freakin' awesome!! :]
Oh, and request-related, I finished Selom's request for the most part -- just need to add finishing touches and then upload.
I'll also then update the waitlist because Caelestis made a request via PM.

Your paper sounds interesting. Wasn't footbinding done because the Chinese thought that small feet are beautiful? It seems very painful. Good luck with that. :phoenix:

I have never been too fond of many aspects of organized religion for various reasons. I won't go into detail about because this isn't the proper place to do so. Anyway, I would find that to be a great topic to write about!

Baron: I have the Portal radio theme as my ringtone, heheh.

Spoiler: big post
Basically, footbinding was done for a variety of reasons, which is what I want to really emphasize in my paper. There seems to be a popular assumption in past research that all Chinese men apparently had a foot fetish and thought that the 3-inch foot was really sexy. The problem is, of course you'll have at least some individuals who have a fetish in whatever (in ANY society), but this research generalized too much. If you look at most art (and by "art", I mean.. paintings of sexual expression) when footbinding was apparently really popular, it is interesting to observe that the men in the paintings rarely were looking or admiring the woman's feet. The man's gaze was always directed away from her feet. If the feet were the most attractive part on a woman's body and was the only object of sexual desire, you would think that most paintings would show this.

I've also heard stories. A father was so distraught from the fact that his young daughter was having her feet bound (if your society sees it as normal..) that he committed suicide. If all the Chinese really accepted it and embraced the practice, why would this happen?

I definitely need to further my research, but from what I already know:
- Reasons for footbinding -
1. Beauty (It's interesting to note that throughout history, pain has always been associated with the attainment of beauty.)
2. Social status (In the beginning, only the elite classes practiced footbinding.)
3. Male dominance and limiting women (Women could hardly walk after having her feet bound, so there's a dominance theme involved)
4. "Civilizedness" (The Han Chinese always wanted to distinguish themselves from the "barbarians" up in the North. Clothing was often used to separate "us" from "them." In addition, the body was considered attire. A woman having her feet bound was part of the attempt to become more civilized - which is very ironic, because footbinding is seen as such a barbaric practice.)

There's also a few reasons I've briefly read up on so I need to research them a bit more.

Re: Pain
The anti-footbinding movement in the early 1900s (I believe?) forced the Chinese to abandon footbinding. However, one method used was to force all women with their feet bound to unbind their feet, to "liberate" them.
...The pain of unbinding the feet was almost as great as the pain of having the feet bound, so these women had to suffer again. :/
