Ralvor: Nice to see you again! :)

I have my internship everyday, varying in hours from either 9AM-2PM or 10AM-12PM. I also have class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I have miscellaneous appointments with professors, too, because I'll be participating in URECA this year (an undergraduate research conference). So.. my free time will be mostly for homework, research, and more research. >__>;
On weekends, I have work from 5PM to 9PM.

Otherwise, I usually work on graphics during the evening, because I usually have a block of free time, then. I get all my work done earlier in the afternoon, because I don't like to procrastinate. :)

Thanks for the compliments :)

I'm fairly experienced with graphic design so that (depending on the request) it doesn't USUALLY take me over an hour to complete a request. If it does, it's usually because it's a complicated design, etc. (ex. wallpapers)
So, I can manage. However, you'll notice I don't shoot out graphics every two seconds. Well, the reason is that I don't have hours and hours of free time to spend on graphic design, especially now that I'm doing graphic design for my internship.
In addition, as I've mentioned before, my belief is that quality takes time. I'd rather take my time (a reasonable amount) on something than half-ass it and post it ASAP.

The wallpaper is 1280x800. (I've posted it below.)
Well, yes, but dark colors can be attractive too, I suppose. I always mix it up :) Some people like the red/black or "gothic" look, some people like OMGWEEHAPPY colors like pink/blue/neon green/etc.

You have a nice day too!

Lunaria: No problem -- good luck with that.

B12Core: I would be happy to make you a logo! Thanks for the compliments ^^

Gray Godot: Thanks for the screenshot! It looks nice on your desktop. :)
It was nice talking to you, indeed. You can request something anytime!

Minami: I'd be happy to! Welcome to my thread :)

It looks like the semester is going to get busier for me after spring break. I'm being brought on as a long term substitute for a ninth grade English class because the teacher is going on maternity leave. I won't have to plan any lessons, but I will be responsible for their proper excution. I'm a little nervous, but excited at the same time. I will have both PAP and regular classes.

I get to teach Romeo and Juliet and the Odyssey. I've never actually read the Odyssey, so I plan to start now (as well as brush up on Romeo and Juliet). Does anyone have a good translation of it they can recommend. I'd prefer one that was translated in the last 100 years or so. Later would be prefered because sometimes the Victorian way of writing can be confusing and I don't have time to read it twice just for comprehension. Is it sad that I can read Shakespeare without looking at the footnotes (most of the time), but Jane Austen confuses me at times?

For a while I was very hostile toward the posibility of going back to teaching, but I've been missing certain aspects of if lately. I guess this opportunity will let know how I really feel about the system again. And if I do end up likng it enough to seek it long term, maybe this opportunity will allow to obtain permanent employment (which will help me fund my graduate study dreams).

I might be in the market for a new sig from you, Vicki. I think it's something I could make myself, but I know you would end up making it look excellent.

Hey, you're teaching my grade! ^^ We read Odyssey already, and we're reading Romeo and Juliet at the end of the year as our 'fun' novel. We're using the Folger Shakespeare Library edition, I think...and for Odyssey we used Signet Classics, incidentally. Or I did. ^^
Good luck with the substitution! I'm sure you'll do wonderfully.

Did you like the Signet Classics translation?

I love the Folger Editions for all the Shakepeare plays. We're just using the one out of the textbook which is the same essentially (Early Modern English accompanied by references (except the references are at the bottom of the page or to the side rather than on the opposite page). The teacher also said it was okay for them to use other edition, so I'll probably recommend that one or the No Fear version. Basically my philosophy is let them read whatever will help them understand it better now. Most of them won't appreaciate Shakespeare (if they ever do) until they are older. I didn't fully appreciate him unti I was a senior in college.

You`re going to teach?! Awesome! It`s great you are doing something you like! And if you decide to keep teaching, awesome too! I`m saying awesome too many times, am I? If that`s it...AWESOME!

BTW, usually how old are the people in 9th grade. Just to know. Obviously, cause in my country we don`t have the same system. Like I said before : "just to know".

BTW nº2: What is that of the different editions of Romeo and Juliet? It`s for the different kinds of english? (old and new LOL).
I haven`t read anything of Shakespeare... :larry: Maybe I`ll read something when I find the chance and the time.

Good luck with everything! :franny:
Thanks. It was, is and always will be a pleasure.

Lunaria: Yes, I did ^^ I didn't have much of a standard of comparison, but make sure to note that it's best to have the same edition. There are several editions of the Signet Classics versions that have different page numbers. It's okay if you have the students find the sentence if the page numbers are different (for discussion purposes), but it's generally easier to have them all the same...I think the newer edition is better, personally.
And that sounds like a good philosophy. With so many different ways of learning, it's always best to let students learn the way they learn best, ¿verdad?

Gray Godot: People in 9th grade are generally 14-15.

Vicki: Did I forget to mention that your IRL graphics opportunities were awesome? I can't remember. But if not:
AWESOME. and re: the general stereotype thing: I hate stereotypes. I get stereotyped as a nerd and a Mormon (question 1. So, you're Mormon? Question 2. How many wives do you have/How many wives does your husband have? ><) oftentimes and I find it annoying (and interesting in that I think analyzing motives behind stereotypes is interesting), but far worse than that is when stereotypes begin to change the person themselves...it's amazing, the things people do to adapt. I suppose some degree of stereotyping is inherent in humanity because we are modeled to categorize things, generally, but when any idiotic thing that someone says can destruct individuality that has taken lives to build up, one knows that it's not a good thing...one of the sad things especially is that I live in a very stereotypical school. Not so much in that its students insist on stereotyping everything, but in that it fits almost every archetype of high school set up by modern-day literature. It's almost frightening, in fact...
Anyways, I'm not quite certain what I've just said, and I think I've repeated myself far too much, but there it is. :edgy:

I'm mainly looking just for myself so I can read it before hand. It's pretty bad when you're only one or two steps ahead of the class. The teacher told me we were most likely going to read the one in the textbook as well.

Gray Godot wrote:

Well the Folger's Edition is the the Early Modern English version (i.e. the Elizabethean English version is another way to put it, or better yet the way it was written in his time). It is left unchanged from I believe the First Folio or maybe one of the other compilations of his plays.

The No Fear versions has the Early Modern English in it, but also a translation into contemporary English. So the students can read what Shakespeare penned, and then look at what it says in a way they are used to speaking so they can understand it better.

Let me know if anything about the explanation was unclear.

I unfortunately don't remember if the R&J translation I read was spectacular or not.. mine was from Penguin Classics, I believe. I had to read it for a course during freshman year, as well as ninth grade.
No clue about the Odyssey - that was ninth grade for me, too. x__x;

Sounds good. Request anytime! I would love to whip up something for you.

It's going really well so far. I've made several flyers. It's somewhat intimidating because I'm not a graphic design intern officially (yet I do graphics work), and there are two hired graphic interns within our office.. I hope I won't have to fight with them over use of a computer or something. ^__^'' Graphic design DEATHMATCH.

That Mormon stereotype/question thing is so stupid, I agree.
And yes, people can be/are heavily affected by stereotypes. There's this thing called the "self-fulfilling prophecy" which can apply to these types of situations. Basically, you believe A (could be a stereotype, belief, anything) about yourself, begin to believe it to be true.. and then you (subconsciously) change your behavior so that you're consistent with the stereotype.
Then again, stereotypes trap us anyway. They limit who we are and who we have the potential to become. If someone is stereotyped to only do "A", they will have to work harder to potentially pursue something that is not "A." This is just a general example and doesn't hold in all situations (it depends..), but yeah. You get the point. >__>;

"I suppose some degree of stereotyping is inherent in humanity because we are modeled to categorize things, generally, but when any idiotic thing that someone says can destruct individuality that has taken lives to build up, one knows that it's not a good thing.."
Your point is absolutely correct. It is human nature to categorize things because frankly, if we wanted to individualize EVERY SINGLE PERSON we came across, that takes up a lot of mental resources. We would be so consumed in making sure that every single person we meet has their own huge laundry list of different traits and characteristics that we probably wouldn't have time to do anything else.
So, we stereotype those we don't know well. Notice that once you get to know someone more and more, you tend to get rid of (hopefully, most) of the general assumptions you held about that particular individual in the first place. A-yup, you eventually realize they're not cookie-cutter, because no one really is. :) Of course, more educated individuals realize this much earlier and therefore, we readily understand the harm in stereotyping.

squizzi: You're very welcome ^__^
By the way, your avatar needs to have custom dimensions: 139x139. That's why it looks kind of.. off. Sorry about not mentioning that earlier!

Sounds Fishy: Ahah, Edgeworth fandom is always entertaining. :B Sure thing! I will try my best to SEXIFY~ (nice word) this.

Blinq:Oh don't worry, I know I can trust you to not immediately throw away my stuff. :)

Thank you very much for the kudos. I believe I have the Folger's Romeo and Juliet at my house. I have so many plays that I forget which ones I have or don't have (I should really get all my books unpacked.

I was sick this morning, so I didn't substitute today, but I was lucky enough to pick up a job for the rest of the week.

Lunaria: I'm sorry that you're sick! Get well very soon.

My internship is great! I really love it so far. This morning I had to do a presentation and I was so incredibly nervous that my arms were shaking.. but everyone seemed to enjoy it towards the end, so I'm not too worried.
The graphics portion is also great and very fun; as I mentioned earlier, I'm working primarily on flyers and advertising for our many Career Center events. :]

Other than that, not too much is going on yet. I'm part of a group project so we're busy organizing our student-run event for April. :]

I haven't worked too much on my footbinding research paper yet because I've been preoccupied with other work and internship-related tasks. My professor e-mails me weekly assignments (i.e. "Make an annotated bibliography by 2/16") and I e-mail him my progress. We're going step-by-step, so the progress won't be too rushed (which I really like!)
It'll mean that towards the end of the semester I will have a MUCH easier time with my paper since I would have made so many components already; I would just have to synthesize and gather everything together. :)

Thanks for asking, by the way! ^__^

B12Core: You already replied by PM so I know you received it ^^'' but yup, I'm happy you like it!

It`s like Lunaria said 14 or 15 years old. About how things are in my country... We have 8 grades of primary school and 4 grades of highschool. What you in the US call ninth grade, for us it is first grade of highschool. Then if we say it with your system I`ll say I`m gonna start ninth grade this year in march probably... :larry:
It`s too soon!! Cause:

Spoiler: This may get you bored if you`re not interested.
I didn`t leave my city except for one day. That`s cause my grandfather passed away and It was a big pain for my mother so we stayed in home. I`m happy that my mother recovered from her father`s death.
I think it was because her mother passed away just three years ago at the same date: January 16. And that made the whole situation a little bit more... expected, they had too much faith in my grandmother`s recovery so... they suffered a lot with that. Now with my grandfather she from the beginning knew he wouldn`t live more than 6 or 7 months.
Thanks for reading this Vicki... I wasn`t sure if to write this or not... but as a person who understands things as well as you do... I think you`ll be able to understand I had to tell someone. Thanks. And sorry if this was innapropiated

1) What`s that with the mormon stereotypes? What are the things that make people think that others are mormon?

2) What you say It`s likely to happen. However, I haven`t seen any cases like the ones you describe. But don`t worry I`m not saying it`s imposible I`m saying that I haven`t seen. Hehe...

3)About the basic human nature of categorize that`s undeniable. And the fact that by knowing someone you start... to respect the way to be of that person, and It`s even better when you start respecting the other ones from the very beginning.

Well I hope this had something useful or smart... hehehe... :uramidn:

Last second EDIT: What!? Lunaria... are you sick!? Ididn`t knew! I`m sorry Ihope you get better soon... and what`s this illness you have?
Thanks. It was, is and always will be a pleasure.

Thanks for your concern, Vicki and Gray Godot. I just woke up feeling a little under the weather this morning (scratchy throat and a little runny nose.) Rest was the best medicine for me, so I stayed home from work (that is the beauty of being a substitute, you can call in minutes before you are supposed to be there, but I'm not that mean, I called in at least an hour before). I'm feeling much better now.

Also, I think biblio is the one who pointed out that ninth grade is 14-15 year olds.

Our system is divided into three schools. Primary school is Kindergarten to 5th grade (5/6 to 10/11 year olds). Then we have secondary school that is divided into Junior High with grades 6-8 (sometimes called Middle School) (11/12 to 13/14 year olds). Finally, there is high school that has grades 9-12 (14/15 to 17/18 year olds).

Gray Godot:

Spoiler:
I am sorry for your loss, and I extend my condolences. I'm glad to see that you're okay (or seem to be) right now. Seriously, if you ever need a friend to talk to, I'm here.

I also apologize for others in advance if they seem not-so-keen about the fact that you're posting such personal information on a public forum. Social support is probably the MOST IMPORTANT thing needed to help cope with life's unfortunate events and crises. I know how it feels to feel burdened by, for example, a traumatic event and feel as if you're the only person in the entire world to have such a devastating experience. Therefore, it helps tremendously to have someone, even if a random person, willing to listen or just.. be there. Again, I extend my heart out to you.

It's a pleasure to hear everyone's opinions on these topics. Please, do not consider your individual opinion as "useless" or "stupid." This is how everyone learns - by listening to what others' think and how they feel.

Lunaria: Nice job flexibility :) I'm glad to hear that you're feeling much better as well. The weather has been fluctuating like crazy so I haven't been feeling so great for the past few days. Good thing I haven't actually gotten sick, but *crosses fingers* anyway.

Jenna:
*cheers* :)

Sounds Fishy: Are you participating in NEID? You would seem like a good candidate, being a fan of Edgey and all. :]

Ralvor: I'm happy to see that you have edited your post and have thought your post over. Please be more careful next time and rethink your words before you even hit the "submit post" button. I trust you to be considerate of others :)

Such flexibility does come with its price. Sometimes there a streches of days with no calls for jobs, and this always happens to me when I really could use the money. Other times you are really looking foward to the conference period (so you can have a moment to yourself with dealing with the duties of the classroom, and then they pull you to cover a class because they didn't get enough subs.

Spoiler: TL;DR About my day
That happened to me today, but not in the situation where I didn't get my conference period. I was working with another sub in a large classroom. It had been an easy day. We had combined Choir and Orchestra because all the music teachers were gone to a conference. I think they didn't call one for orchestra because all the classes are small, and they didn't want use resources that weren't necessary. Anyway, after lunch a teacher left unexpectedly without getting sub, and I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, so they asked me to cover.

I think we have the right to refuse, but I'm not going to tell a school principal no when they are in a bind. These are the people that can say whether or not they want you in their school, and I'd rather be on their good or prefered list. I was almost placed in a math class, but I let them know I wasn't really good at math, so I was placed in my originally intended spot, English. The first class was good, and I only had to write down two names. The second class was just horrible. I've never had to call the assistant principal twice to get anyone to behave. I'm sure they'll all be in big trouble tomorrow. And I just hope their regular teacher shows up so I don't get stuck with them again.

The good part of the day was getting to talk to the other substitute. It turns out that we were in high school band together. She graduated two years after me, and we exchanged band stories from when we were their. She's studying to take the MCAT right now, so I hope she gets a good score so she can go to the medical school of her choice. She said she's applying everyone in our state except one (Go common application process!)

Lunaria: I hear you about that; I feel like it's always the case for everyone where you get no calls when you really need it, etc. Life just likes to mess around with us like that.

I always felt really bad for substitutes. A lot of my past classmates had absolutely no respect for them; they would lie, act up, etc. It was such irresponsible and immature behavior >__>;
I'm sorry that you had to cover such an annoying class. :(
That's cool that you talked to that other substitute - I like catching up with people I haven't talked to in years. It's crazy to see how far they've come (.. or not).

What do you usually do as a sub for these random classes like math, etc.? Hand out worksheets or something?

Blinq: Haha, that's hardcore. Thanks for the support :B

SF: NEID - Naked Edgeworth Icon Day.
It takes place on Valentine's Day and basically, those involved use avatars or signatures with topless, etc. characters (nothing explicit or anything because that would obviously be against the rules). It doesn't have to be Edgeworth, but I find it more appropriate given the name of the "holiday." :)

So, that's why I think you'd like the idea. XD

Scent of Fresh Lemon: Sure! :)

Spoiler: More Secrets of the Substitute Revealed
Students still try to lie and trick substitutes. We just learn to believe no one, call the office or a teacher to confirm the lies/humor the students, and deal with those same students being upset and not wanting to be our friend because we don't let them get their way. I've often told high school students that I don't need their friendship. I already have an ID that can get me what ever I want that is illegal to them, and I own a car so I don't need ride to the mall or school. (I say this to myself or my friends because this would be inapropriate to say to a student in my opinion).

I'm actually really nice to many of the students. I don't yell at them when they sleep or don't do their work in certain situations. If they are sleeping I will gently wake them up and ask if they are okay, but a student who is sleeping is not as big of a problem as one is his talking/not working. Usually if a student is not doing their work, but instead reading for another class or doing some other assignment, I encourage them to do their assigned work, leave a note for the teacher, and go about my business. In the past I've had more problems trying to force them into doing their work. If a student is not doing their work and is distracting others, then its time to whip up some discpline by warning them and then sending them to the office.

When they are openly mocking or try to negotiate the school rules, I now kindly ask them or offer that they are welcome to discuss this in the Asst. Principal's office. This usually tells them that I don't take crap like that. I'm leanient on some things, but I do try to follow most of the schools rules.

Do you mean like if I get randomly assigned to a class like math? It all depends on the situation. Some teachers know they aren't getting a sub who is math inclined and leave notes for the students to copy. If they leave no plans, I'll consult another teacher on what to do.

It's a shame to know that students are still acting like idiots... then again, I didn't expect much of an improvement.

I was just wondering about other subjects because I know you're grounded in English, so I figured you'd just give them assigned work for a subject like math. @__@;

I've always had respect for my substitutes - it's a tough job, and I can tell. I once had a substitute teacher who gave us logical thinking puzzles and other mind-bending stuff during our class. You could tell he was a cool guy who had a lot of years of experience with students. :)

Yeah, I think I've subbed for math once on purpose, and I went over the notes in one class, but in another I actually had to explain how we got an answer, so I had to figure it our first. When I sub I usually stick to English, History, Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, or Technology courses. I stray away from the hard sciences because of the potential for lab hazards, and from the industrial courses because of shop accidents. I like to stay away from any hazards that could do me or other bodily harm.

If we run out of things to do in a class (which happens so often) I have to play it by ear. Usually I have them review something with me as a class. I might consider bringing some logical puzzles or other things. It might be fun for them. I guess word finds could work too.
