Maya is amazing, witty, brave, cute... Need I go on??
She is one of the best characters in the entire series. It is very sad that she didn't appear in GS4, even though she was mentioned. I wanted her to at least be a suspect in another murder trial. That would have kept the game going and would have stuck to her character and her reputation of always 'getting into trouble'. Plus, she is half of my favourite pairing of all time...

But in GS5 I don't want to see Maya in trouble (like, you know, kidnapped, trapped or accused), but she definitely should be in GS5... not as a main character anymore, but she should have some relevance to the story in one case or two.

I felt really bad for her the first time I played 1-2. The whole case shocked me, it was my first time with a Phoenix Wright game, barely knew anything about it, I didn't expect Mia to die so soon (and at all) and seeing her (mysterious at the time) sister so helpless made me realize one thing... "This game is GREAT. It makes you care for its characters when you barely know anything about them".

What is one aspect of Maya's character you think people misinterpret in the fandom if any?
This isn't something in her personality, but I find it odd that so many people seem to write her as easily giving up her duties as Kurain Master to Pearl. If she did want to resign, I think it wouldn't be something she'd do on a whim or anything.

I can see Maya giving the title to Pearl, but only if she thought that Pearl was mature enough for the task (maybe in seven years) and if Pearl herself was willing to take it on.
Given the events of the final case though, I doubt Maya would want to leave Kurain until she finally restored it's good reputation.

a) It's an all-too convenient plot point in fanfic [and not a good one]
b) Maya's detractors claim she somehow doesn't 'deserve' to be Master and Pearl deserves it more.
As for b), people tend to claim Pearl is more dedicated and has more spirit powers, but this is incorrect. Maya has stronger powers than Pearl, she calls spirits away from her in 2-4 and 3-5. And we don't know if Pearl was as dedicated to her training after Morgan stopped overseeing her every move. People claim Maya is too lazy to train during the games, but she's still quite able to call Mia and Dahlia, showing her powers haven't suffered, and really, cut her some slack. Getting shot at, knocked unconscious, shoved in a box and framed for murder is just marginally traumatic. No wonder she's not rushing to take more channelling appointments. Also,the fact that Pearl knows some spiritual things Maya doesn't doesn't mean Maya is lazy and incompetent - Pearl's entire life has been devoted to nothing but spirit training. She can't read, or do crafts, never left Kurain till 2-2... and Morgan was responsible for both Maya's training and most of her upbringing, so maybe Morgan just didn't bother to train Maya as well as her precious Pearl.
People seem to assume that the Master position is some torture where she'll be stuck in Kurain 24/7 and never see Phoenix again, but the games themselves proved this incorrect - the credits of GS3 very specifically state she will be Master of Kurain AND Manager of Wright and Co., and look after Phoenix and Pearl.
And would generations of Feys really squabble and kill over some boring job where all you do is train acolytes? 3-5 tells us that Misty was still able to wield some of her Master powers even when 'disappeared', too.
As for giving up the title to Pearl, that has the forgone conclusion Pearl even wanted to be Master. That was all Morgan's idea, I'm not sure Pearl even knew Morgan's intention. Of course, there's a strong sense in the games Maya doesn't particularly want to be Master either, it's just something already decided for her, by Misty and Mia. Mia had a choice, Maya didn't. But the ending suggests she'll try to be Master to fulfill her mother's and probably Mia's wishes. The fact her mother basically died specifically for her to be able to take the position has got to weigh heavily on her.
If things turned antagonistic from Pearl's end, I'm sure Maya would give up the position to avert another Morgan-style fallout, but there's nothing to suggest this would ever happen, quite the opposite.
Also, it's going to be a long time till Pearl's 18 - and way after the AJ game. I doubt any kind of handover would occur before then.

But regarding the idea of her giving up the Master's seat, I actually don't necessarily see this as Maya dodging her responsibilities at all. Rather, I thought the third game was hinting that she was disillusioned with channeling and that she felt it "didn't help anyone". Rather than her running away from work, I always felt it was her bowing out because she didn't want to cause anymore friction in the family. She didn't want there to be a divide between people who supported her and people who supported Pearl (especially since Pearl is the superior channeler).
And really, after all the grief the Fey family has caused her, can you blame her for wanting out?
I always thought that Maya made it pretty clear in 3-5 that she was sick of channeling, and Godot's last words to her seemed to me as if they were purposeful foreshadowing. It was something along the lines of "This is something you should remember well, Maya. A lawyer never cries until it's all over". He specifically addresses this to her, as if he expected her to follow in Mia (and Phoenix's) footsteps and become a lawyer.
Anyway, just my two cents. I don't think Maya giving up the Master's seat to Pearl is a poor plot point, or one that makes Maya irresponsible. On the contrary, I think when written well, it can fit with what 3-5 left us with beautifully.

I think it's true that she's more mature than she gets credit for. She comes off as immature on the outside only because she knows how to have fun and keep a child-at-heart sort of attitude (which is a good thing)... but she also really knows when and how to pull herself together and handle serious situations.

As legitimately respectable as she is, though, I must say I like her most for her simply hilarious lines. I mean, seriously, she's the originator of the epic ladder vs. stepladder debate! She deserves plenty of appreciation for that alone!
Also, the "hamBURger->spaGHEtti" thing made me laugh out loud for a looong time.
I'm not a Nick/Maya 'shipper, but I support their relationship as deep brotherly-sisterly friends.
Also, Maya's relationship with Mia (<-- amazingly amazing song that is not mine) is one of the sweetest and most meaningful in the series.
