Kidding, I use Photoshop (In case you don't have it, Imageready), nothing more is needed. Below is a bad explained tutorial.

1. Use a smiley base, a yellow colored ball. This is an example Image Just download it and feel free to harass it~
2. Choose the sprite you want to mimic and copy the image or download it. If it's an animation, I suggest downloading the sheet.
3. If you copied the file, open the image in a new file, in cutboard size.
4. Got to EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> GENERAL (For Mac; Photoshop->Preferences etc.), and look at Image interpolation. The default setting is usually Bilinear, which makes the image blurrier once you resize it, which is bad. Change the setting to Nearest Neighbour and you can resize the image like in MS Paint.
5. Now you've opened the file, place the smiley image to the same file. Oh, and I recommend transparenting the sprite's/sheet's background before chopping down details, be sure to not have the Anti-Alias option switched on (Magic Wand). I also suggest deleting the Background Layer.
6. Probably the most important feature of a PW smiley is the hair. Now this needs patience. Zoom in as much as you like on the sprite; use the lasso tool to make an area around the hair or other features, and be as exact as possible, to avoid skin colours and missing parts. Copy Paste into a new layer and hide all the other layers to check if there are unnecessary pixels, and erase them.
7. Now show the smiley base layer and place it under the recently copy pasted layer.
8. Resize the copy pasted layer (let just say hair) until it fits the head of the smiley, do it once, because resizing the layer multiple times is baaad, I tell you.
9. Just in case zoom out (100%) and check the contrast. Edit with the pencil tool in case something doesn't look right.
10. Create a new layer and select the Pencil Tool with pixel size 1. Use the color black to draw eyes and mouth, and et cetera.
11. Hands are easy to make. Mimic a hand of the sprite with the pencil tool, use the brightest yellow of the smiley base and draw the area of the hand, and use black to draw outlines and details. You can add shadows and so on.
12. Almost finished; Crop the image until there's no unneeded space outside the smiley.
13. Save the file through Save for Web, save it as .gif and NO MATTE.

Now making animations is a little harder, you have to probably lasso+copypaste each frame of the sprite and resize it. But you can also tween the movements if let say the hands are only moving, like my Scratchie-cat Matt hands are .

WHAT THE HELL

just use paint, FFS!

And yeah, the tutorial is complicated, sorry. It takes basic Photoshop skills.

at the same time, a young edgeworth would be good.

Theres absolutely nothing in photoshop that can be used to make smileys. At least not what I can find. Or sprites. Or any other kind of item made from scratch. It doesn't have any artistic features. And the very few I've found (thanks to Wooster) can only use vector editing, which might be quite useful, but I can hardly see how it could be used for smilies.

I cannot see how your way is faster, HP. Basicly everything you did to start it up was to try and mimic paint. The real part, number 6, is so very easy to do in paint because of the VAST ammount of additional features. Photoshop can't make a streight, or curved, line. I found out how to make a dot, though. Photoshop lacks so many of paint's features that I'm going to descripe it, for making smileys, as 'useless'. I use photoshop only for indexing it so my gif animator doesn't freak out.

It looks like it's possible, but I can hardly say it looks worthwhile. The only apperent good thing about it is that you avoid shading. But I like manually shading my sprites, so I really can't see the point in that. Everything else'll just get blurry, I presume.

By the way, I'm gonna try my hand at laughing Daian.

a) paint cannot transparent, as far as I know
b) paint cannot make animations with layers
c) nothing gets blurry unless you resize bicubically/bilinearly
d) Paint's rubbishness.

Oh, we don't have a Bikini smiley... I wonder what to do...

Heres my two-... pennies... O.o

I find Photoshop ok for pixelling, I proably use it for big sprite, but, at heart I started on paint and I love paint. SOmetimes simplicity is its finest,I don't see the need to resize parts of a sprite, a smilie should be a smilie not a smaller sprite. It should have its own flare, and I think its achieved by making each part from scratch.

Yeah... >_>

So those book and hat of kawadzu were made from scratch were they, and the beard of the other dude who's name escapes me?

I must say, I'm impressed.

Although, even with resizing chunks of sprite, they are put on a yelow circle, and any hands or facial detail are hand drawn, giving them uniqueness. In the end of the day, it also has to be recognisable as that character.

I'm afraid you're not that experienced with Photoshop, Mikker, because those were words of a beginner. Photoshop can do anything that paint does IN ADDITION to having layers and transparenting and 1000 other features that certainly has nothing to do with paint. It's a program to use for all kinds of things, not only editing pictures and coloring. I'd rather stay on this program than learning new ones.
I'm practicing media-designing and Photoshop, Flash and Illustrator are the programs I use to do most of things, and it takes a while to find the needed tools. People find Photoshop frustrating at the beginning, but believe me, it get a lot easier with time. And once you've learned it, you can use it for other purposes.
I cannot stand Paint simply because it's too simplified and I prefer professional programs. You cannot constrain proportions while resizing, you can't step backward 25 steps in history, you cannot zoom in to 1600%. There are tons of things you can't do in Paint that could save lots of time.
And yes, pixel art can be done in PS, if you only use the right tools. I feel like doing a pixel art tutorial later...

(Btw. Nice Bikini, UP. You're improving!)

I think I'm going to attempt my favourite characters: hair-twirling Gant and steaming Godot ;D And maybe bird-pecked Phoenix!

Edit: What program do you use for animated smilies? NVM!! I finally know how to use ImageReady X3

I use photoshop as well as Paint Shop Pro 8 to do my graphics and animations. Personally, I find PSP easier to use than Photoshop when it comes to graphics.

To make my smilies I just open up a new image file. I use the yellow circle for my base. Then I just copy and paste the features from the sprite for the smile. When I mean features, I mean just the hair and other accessories. The rest I draw it.

Unlike others who save the sprite sheets, I save the sprite gif itself because I find it easier to copy and paste each animation frame. I animate my smilies in Animation Shop which comes with PSP. I just copy and paste each frame from PSP into AS and make sure everything is alligned the way I want it. 8D

Yeah, I'll be looking forward to such a tutorial. I havn't been able to find that much info on photoshop, and all the tutorials I find on the internet pretty much says "put a few 100s of diffrent filters on it, and voila", which can't be used for anything but that perticular instance (and I can never get THAT to work most of the time, either). I know photoshop has many cool gadgets, but for me it lacks the basic tools paint has.

Ultimate Prosecutor: arround half of the smileys I've made are done completely from scratch (like three newest ones I've made). The other half was based on resized hair, like :will: for instance, but those are so destroyed from resizing that most of it is done from scratch ABOVE that. When I'm on the laughing Daian, I'll be sure to make a paint tutorial. :hotti:

clickmon: It needs a bit of tweaking, especially shading the hand and the visor needs a bit of help, but very nice for a first try. Impressive.

>_>

If you right-click the brush you can select pencil. You can change the rubber to pencil mode in the top toolbar. That makes easy pixelling. Pixel are (from a previous image) is proably much easier in Photoshop (I dont tend to do much pixel work anymore) because of the layers. >_>

I don't belive the hand needs any shading but I see little pixels that could be removed/editted. As for the visor, I see a spot which I aciddentally erased (underneath the eye-part) but is there anywhere else the visor needs to be tweaked? Maybe the hair too. After I'm done with this smilie I will work on hair-twirling Gant :gant:!

You can use Photoshop too to animate ^__^ Just go to Window --> Animation and you'll get the same animation window you get in Imageready.
