Don't know if the movie is gonna suck. It may be a good movie.

Though not at all related to Watchmen.

Allegedly Snyder ditched the first script because it was not enough like the comic book. Also, Moore did his standard spiel.

After a small google search I learned what this is.
Meh, yet another superhero movie. Overdone fad.

Title still sounds gay.

Understandable, but you've got to understand: Watchmen is nothing like any "superhero" series you've seen before, I guarantee you.

It's kind of funny that you say "fad" considering Watchmen, the actual comic book, was from nearly thirty years ago and was a major deconstruction of the superhero genre, fusing an incredibly well-crafted, unique plot with a damned human, developed cast of characters. it was satirical, intelligent, cliche breaking, and the ending is still one of the best damn twists from the genre-savvy that I've seen.

It was ground-breaking for its time and it's still relevant today, especially considering the irony in that Watchmen seemingly predicted the direction that comic books would be taking.

edit: I niced this up a bit more so it sounded less confrontational

It was just info I got. They went with Hayter's script instead, IIRC, as opposed to the one they had last. Or something. I don't keep up on movie news much.

Watchmen was a pretty nice read although I'm not a fan of comics. Guess that was the point of Watchmen. Movie will suck though. And Moore needs a brain kick.

Whatever, The whole Superhero movie adaption thing is getting old, No matter if you're too pigheaded to accept this fact.
When they create 20+ superhero movies in a couple of years, then yes, it's a fad.

You missed my point yo.

Besides, watchmen's been attempting to find it's way to theaters since it came out, it just happened to coincide with various other releases (not that superhero movies have ever not come out)-- or perhaps that's why it made it out in the first place. It's still nothing like those movies at all.

There's also the argument that it's not even a superhero film and it's foolish to categorize it as one, it's not like anyone but a sole character has any powers, the rest are just dudes running around in costume, a major point.

... But it's still gonna suck. ~

No, it's popularity. Popularity =/= Fad. Fad means it stays for just a little bit, and last I checked, superhero films have been around since the days of the Captain America and Batman film serials of the 40's.

About 4 or more years ago my fiance tried getting me to read Watchmen. He also tried getting me to read V for Vendetta back then as well (before the movie was even announced). Well, I promised him (just like V for Vendetta) that I would read it before the movie came out. He just repurchased the graphic novel and I'm only 1/4th of the way through it.... gah.. But it IS really great!

For some reason I can only picture this as if Ben Edlund made The Tick into a very serious comic series involving wars and history and the rise and fall of heroes, etc.. I'm not sure why I keep viewing thsi as a VERY dark The Tick, since it really isn't like it, but there are vague similarities I notice here and there.

Also, V for Vendetta sucked compared to the graphic novel, but it was by the Matrix people, so of course it was going to suck.

ALSO also, I fully and 100% admit to liking 300, I don't care WHAT you people say. The only thing I would have changed in the movie was take out that damn woman. If I wanted a movie with a strong female role in it, I'd yell at James Cameron to finish the damned Battle Angel Alita movie he's been working on since the dawn of time, and to stop making more TERMINATOR movies, GAHHH!

OK no more rambling!

NO WAIT I have a history of our Watchmen books! This is the third one we've purchased, right? we've also purchased THREE of V for Vendetta.
My fiance loaned Watchmen out to a coworker and friend at our work, and she loved it. HOWEVER a week or two later, she died of a drug overdose. Well, we didn't know how to ask for our stuff back (it wasn't the only thing we loaned her), especially since she was living with an abusive boyfriend at the time. Later from another friend we found out he threw all her stuff away, so that was the end of that book.
Our SECOND copy of Watchmen was loaned to my fiance's mother, who in turn liked it, but then promptly lost it. We've also had two V for Vendetta books get stolen at work by people unknown (it'd be there one minute and the next it was completely gone).

Comics have a short life in our household.

ok enough rambling, I've been awake far too long

I suppose I take offense since I've read over 50% of the books listed, and not because "school made me", either (my school had weird books they'd make us read, one teacher even banning some altogether, like Huckleberry Finn). Small towns r fun hurrrrrrrrr....

Read the graphic novel first, loved it.
Saw the movie last night at midnight, also loved it.

Yes some things were taken out here and there, and some scenes may have been extended a bit too long...
Spoiler:
Like Laurie and Dan's sex scene. But damn, that was one of the most awkward sex scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I've seen some pretty graphic stuff on /d/, but that was just...lolwut?
Plus the music playing didn't help. I just lol'd hard through the whole thing. Hooray for Nite Owl ass.

Also
Spoiler:
I wish they showed more of Rorschach's background than just glimpses into his past :/

But overall, I thought it was a proper movie adaption. Of course the original source is going to be better than the movie. Always has been.
But that's why you need to look at the two mediums as two separate things. You're never going to get the same narrative, the same pacing of a story in a movie that you get in a book.

It was something that I paid attention to the entire time.

I can say, that I watched it.

It was pretty much me thinking to myself "Yep, that's Watchmen in not book form."

I GUESS YOU COULD SAY I WATCHED THE WATCHMEN!!!11!!!!11!

It's looks like this is going to be the most pragmatic version of Watchmen we're ever going to get. And to be fair, the reviews seem to be mixed just because of the fact that it's this type of adaption. (56 from Metacritic, that's still around 2 1/2-3 Stars.)

Still, I probably need to watch the film first, then read the graphic novel, in that order. Just so there's no chance I'll start going 'they changed it, now it sucks'

I thought the book was fine....but I reckon they'll totally struggle to convert it straight to a movie there's just more you can do with a comic-style still the basic elements of the novel are there.

And I suppose without the film I'd never have read the novel :gymshoe: Even if it was only so I could moan and complain about the bits they missed out when I eventually watch the film.

But that's putting yourself into a place where you'll have a lot of the film spoiled for you in a more mediocre version.

I still say everyone should first read the graphic novel so that "35 minutes ago" still has the incredible impact on it not knowing it'll happen.

So I saw the movie and it sucked huge amounts of ass, despite how so very close it came to being incredibly awesome.

Snyder botched up the themes and the last twenty minutes were fucked up beyond belief

"So close yet so far" basically summed it up. He copied so many things scene-for-scene or at least tried to but he kind of forgot the THEMES or REASONS behind them or left out important info, requiring comic fans to fill in the blanks with their knowledge

It didn't make any sense to change from the giant squid ending either, the movie was already long enough, if he had just added 15 minutes and used the GIANT SQUID it would've made a lot more sense.

But instead he left a lot of holes. Like, the existence of Bubastis (why was he even there at all, he was in like one scene) if Veidt wasn't fucking around with genetics.

I gotta say though the opening credits were godly good. Like really good. Holy shit the opening credits were fucking AWESOME.

Agreed. That, plus the first scene and the prison break scene were by far the best things about the movie. Sure the Comedian death scene wasn't like that in the comic, but it was the kind of addition that really didn't harm anything and was fun to watch.

I saw it again today because a friend of mine hadn't seen it and wanted to. I kind of liked it a bit better the second time, mostly because I wasn't trying to form an opinion on it and I was ready for all of the things that put me off the first time I saw it. I did notice some inconsequential details this time though; like S.Q.U.I.D. being the name of the reactor, and an elevator music version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" when Ozy was going on his whole back story spiel.

The director's cut DVD'll be interesting at least, even though it'll most likely be a day long.
