Hello there.

I'm a law student, finishing my first year. I also happen to be a big fan of the Ace Attorney games. Imagine my surprise when my Civil Procedure II professor used this in her PowerPoint slides. It's from a section on discovery - that's the part between formally serving the lawsuit and the start of trial, where you get to investigate. Notice anyone familiar?

I find the last line particularly funny. The answer I believe is no, you can't simply state "Objection!".

She probably just did a Google Image Search for "Objection" and picked the first result, but it's funny to think that my professor, a legal scholar of great renown, has spent some spare time playing through Ace Attorney.

You should ask her if she's actually played the games, or, like you said, picked that image at random.

Oh sweet, I giggled.

Reminds me that, once I see my uncle again, I should show him Phoenix Wright. He is a lawyer and I'm curious what he would say about it. *g*

You, The Goddamned Batman, shall make all your friends at law school play Phoenix Wright. The faith of the world is in your hands... I think.
And that is probably the best PowerPoint slide I have ever seen for school purposes :keiko:

"Is it proper to simply state 'objection' ?"

xD
What about yelling it?

'Objection.' not equal to 'OBJECTION!' . :3

When I had jury duty a few months ago the lawyers said, "Objection, your Honor." The lawyers would then state their objection, and the judge would either sustain it or overrule it. That might be what the professor means. You just can't scream out Objection. You'll just look like a dumbass if you do.

We're still on depositions, which is part of pre-trial discovery and thus there's no judge present. So really you only object to the phrasing of the question for the record so you can bring it up at trial, or you can object if they ask for information that is privileged.

To be honest, since I've started law school I've had little time to play Ace Attorney, combined with the fact that there hasn't been a new one for so long.

I would be lying if I said that the Ace Attorney wasn't at least part of the reason I decided to study law.

Oooh, yeah, I've seen this around too. Ace Attorney was mentioned in my tenth grade Commerce Studies textbook. I don't remember exactly what it said as it was two years ago, but I remember there was some extension question which had something along the lines of "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a game made for Nintendo DS in which one assumes the role of a lawyer, Phoenix Wright. See if you can play this game and discuss the differences between PW and the way law really works,"

...Obviously not everyone had a DS so we were never made to do that question, but the fact it was mentioned in my textbook was interesting. :udgy:

Really? A textbook mentioned that? I'm surprised it doesn't contrast the difference in governmental policy between the "current leadership" of the Soviet Union and Communist China.

It probably did that too on some other page, but on the unit I was talking about, which referred to the Court Proceedings, it mentioned PW. I was like wtflol D: :zaviaar:

I think he meant that he would expect such a textbook to be outdated.
