So... Where were Miles on those "six months"?
On a foster house? With Grossberg, who knew Gregory more than everyone? And if he was with Grossberg, how Von Karma managed to became his tutor?
I can't remember any part of the game that they explained this.

Because Manfred is a wanker and wanted revenge on Gregory for ruining his perfect record.

I have a guess on an answer to that question. Von Karma already knew what he did was wrong. He knew he killed Gregory. He didn't want Edgeworth to know. That would be why he'd take the son in. So that the son wouldn't suspect anything. Bear in mind Edgeworth was surprised in that case where his father died that he "thought he killed his father". Von Karma wants the "perfect record" and he wants to make sure he doesn't get caught (even though Gregory "damaged his perfect record"). What screwed up his plans was Phoenix's thinking. If he hadn't have discovered what Von Karma was doing, I'd bet Edgeworth wouldn't have suspected him. That's my guess at least. Is that what loobywright was thinking or is it something else?
If I were to guess where Edgeworth was...I'd guess he'd still be in England somewhere. Maybe with another relative? No clue really. That's anybody guess.

Of course, that Edgeworth would never suspect his adoptive father would be a bonus. Either way, he'd probably have arranged for Edgeworth to be with him as soon as possible. If he waited six months, another family might take him in. So he'd have used his connections to secure the adoption and get Edgeworth into the care of his wife, and then return after his healing trip.
We can go further than that, even. Franziska's behavior suggests that she might have been neglected at times in favor of Edgeworth! It's possible that von Karma really did treat Edgeworth as a son, whatever that meant to him, until he lost his perfect record.
