Croik, I have a few saves here and there I can try to use and get basic pictures for everyone.

Here's a couple shots of most characters from case 3:

I'll probably try and get some from case 4 when I play through that too.

I hate to break it to you but you've got no$gba set up wrong. The "backlight" should be VGA Poppy Bright. At the moment the colors of those screens are too washed out.

Still, they should atleast work for letting people see what the characters look like.
(What a difference by the way, thanks! :D)

Edit: Got a few sprites from the beginning of case 4, with some blinking frames to make up for my mistake in the last ones:

Ok I changed my mind, I'm gonna start with case one. I was gonna play my hard copy for my walkthrough play, but I might as well cap while I do it.

Thanks for those shots guys!

What the heck is up with the perspective on the shot of Edgeworth in there. His shoulder is substantially larger than his HEAD. I mean, dude, the man has always had some serious shoulders, but LOL.

Needs sprites!

These are in progress sheets from only the first few minutes of case 1 - they are in no way complete and they're not even that well organized, but if someone wants to take it upon themselves to animate a few, that'd be great, since I'm not worrying about doing gifs yet.

These are all non spoiler and can be used around the forum:

http://www.court-records.net/sheets/gksheet-edgeworth.gif
http://www.court-records.net/sheets/gksheet-gumshoe.gif
http://www.court-records.net/sheets/gksheets-extras.gif

(My computer can't run the emulator that disables layers so I'm doing these in no$gba, which is why some of them are chopped off at the text block. I'll fix those once I find a clean shot)

You guys need an extra hand with the ripping process? I’ve worked a little with Rom hacking before but never with a NDS format. Here’s what I pulled up after poking around the Rom for a bit.

Spoiler: Behold! Gumshoe mini-sprites!
Image

But wait, all the colors are messed up! (and there are a lot more, I just grabbed these as an example)

As Mikker mentioned earlier, automated tools do exist to mass rip sprites and other data from ROM’s. These programs work great with older formats such as NES, SNES, GBA etc but with the NDS being relatively new, a bunch of … problems come up. Tile-Layer Pro didn’t cut it, I ended up having to import the main BIN file into Tile Molester to find anything that resembled a sprite. And if you’ve worked with tile molester before, it can feel like that it’s molesting you at times.

The problem with this case is the palette. If anyone with more knowledge of rom hackan than me can assist in finding the data on the internal palette we could speed up this entire process and do one mass rip for all the mini spirtes. The alternative would be ‘manually’ setting the palette for each individual character. A bit tedious but less so than screen capping each frame.

As for the larger character sprites, well, those are a bit trickier, and probably out of the scope of my abilities. The data for those sprites are most likely stored in a ‘fragmented’ pattern. This screenshot from Deufeufeu’s site illustrates that (btw if anyone has a copy of that animation tool it would be really nice, I couldn’t find it). Piecing them together by hand would be a nightmare. The solution would be to make a custom script … something I’m not all that keen on doing, especially from scratch. Going through all the work of writing a custom program to only find someone else already did it is well, demotivating to say the least. I’m sure with some modifications, the program used to rip the GS4 sprites could be adapted to work with GK. You’d have to get in contact with whoever wrote the program though.

Automatic sprite extraction would be very welcome. It is indeed a pain to cap the walking sprites (the "mini sprites").

Here is the Mikumo walking sprites I capped so far:

Here, I've gotten a couple more sprites. It's really hard to get them to talk, so I've only gotten some blinking ones.

I made these with the sprite sheets Croik made, and animating these is quite easy for me now. :godot:

I decided to try and fix some of my sprite rips with a custom palette. KSA_Tech, I hope you don’t mind, but I took your screen caps and used it as the reference point to recolor Kay’s (Mikumo’s?) animations.

Spoiler: Kay Sheet 1
Image

Spoiler: Kay Sheet 2
Image

(The blank spaces in some of the lower sprites are where some other sprite is supposed to be layered over it)

The problem with using this method as opposed to finding the internal palette settings is that 1) the colors may not exactly match up to the real deal since I’m pulling the RGB values from a screencap that’s been rendered with an emulator instead of the source code and 2) it’s a bit of work. Each character has their own unique color palette so what works for Kay won’t for say Gumshoe.

Unless someone else can successfully rip out the palette settings I suppose this method would be the most efficient for getting at the sprites. I’ll be glad to offer my services for the rest of them. However, for each character I’ll need a few “reference” screencaps. It may seem weird, but I don’t really want to play though the game to get them myself. I don’t speak Japanese and I don’t want the game spoiled for me before the English release (but I am willing to view and work with the sprites, odd huh).

So, post or PM me caps of each character you guys want ripped and I’ll go at it. Make sure the screenshots are saved in .png or .bmp format, otherwise some color information may be lost. Oh, and if someone could give me a different place to host the images that would be appreciated as well. There’s a limit to how much I can put on my university account.

Don't I know it! :meekins:

I'm still hoping to hear from Invertigo, who did the AJ rips for us, but until then any mini sprites you can rip for us would be greatly appreciated. If you don't want to go through the trouble of changing the color, go ahead and just send the raws on to me (courtrecord@gmail dot com), since I'm still capping for the big sprites and will have plenty of references to go by.

Speaking of which I have a few more up! These sheets have Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and Makoto's little sprites on them if you can use those for the color swap. I should have some Maggey tomorrow.

Croik, if you can get these in the original PNG or BMP formats it would really help. GIF can wash out the colors a bit and blend some pixels, may not be noticeable at standard resolution but it makes a difference. I can get started on Edgeworth, Gumshoe and that police guy for now.

Oh, gif seems to work fine for now, but I would still like future reference caps to be in PNG if you don’t mind. As for what I need for a reference, just a simple, straight cap of a pose will do. You don’t need to do any cleaning, just as long as there are no obstructions. Unfortunately I can’t really go off of game screenshots from websites, since they’re usually in a lossy format (jpeg) or have been resized.

Shouldn't he be spoiler free anyway, as we all know his part in case 1 already? (trailer, the game itselfs tells you after 30 seconds, etc)

Or does it mean he appears in more than one case? In this case please don't mark his spoilers in the way "spoiler for case 1", "spoiler for case x", because that reveals too much. Kristoph's page (http://www.court-records.net/animation4/aa-kristoph.htm) for example already tells you everything without looking at his spoiler sprites, because you know he has spoiler animations in case 1 and 4.

@Odrom

No problem. I was capping Mikumo to use her as the test partner on PWLib 1.2's Mikumo Extension (that will allow development of Gyakuten Kenji games on the PWLib Casemaker), since nothing better then her.

Thanks, since capping the up/down poses are really painful (due to the map's low height).

I'll organize the sheet for her (since i'll need to animate her in PWLib (AIGE) for the test), but I can do the organization for all other walking sprites sheets released (if people want to).

And thank YOU, Croik, for giving me something to work on with sprite animating (already animated the majority of custom sprites on this site :p)

I dunno if you can get the little extra side sprite also, but there's Maggey, the officer, and Payne.

Lusankya wrote:

Not everyone played the demo, so some of Makoto's later sprites are still considered spoilers. There are also some sprites that are really much better if you see them in context, so those I wouldn't want people to use around the site either.

Lusankya wrote:

I know, but it's just as dangerous not to do it that way. If I put them all under one generic "spoiler" tag, in the case of Kristoph someone might finish case 1 and immediately want to find his pound sprite, not realizing that he shows up later. I would rather someone see "case 4 spoilers" and wonder for a while than have someone click on a tag thinking it was safe and accidentally see his final breakdown.

That's also why the Safe Sprite section exists - because only safe sprites go on it, there are no tags and no risk of extra case spoiling.

I don't see the campness in it.

On a serious note, I am really impressed by the variety of mini sprites.

Job’s finished.

Spoiler: Cop A

Spoiler: Cop B

Unfortunately I cant get the body on the side in the first pic, too much of his face and hair are cut off. Oh, there are at least three different Generic Cop sprite sets, each wearing a slightly different uniform. I pulled the first two from the screens you posted, keep an eye out for the cop with his outer coat off.

For the life of me I can’t find Payne! Even minor cameo characters like Ema have at least a row of sprites. Are there any more poses or animations that Payne does? It’s quite possible that they integrated him into the background instead of giving him his own sprite, that or he’s jammed next to someone else’s set and I’m looking over it. Poor Payne.

Also, while searching for Payne I ran into alternate sprite sets of Gumshoe and Edgeworth, which I assume are from a flashback case since they’re lumped together with a younger Kay, Franny and Manfred. The color schemes are different from their present selves so I’ll need caps of them as well.

Payne only shows up that once, and only has two frames of animation, so he might not be in there. I'll just cap him normally.

I'll keep the shots coming! I don't think Cop 3 shows up in the case I'm on but I'll keep my eye out for him.

And thanks again for doing this, it's a huge help!

By the way, I had to shrink the sprites a little bit to make them fit into the bench like avery other character.

I was browsing through the case spoiler threads, while averting my eyes from the spoiler bits I found a few screenshots that were posted. Some of the sprites were obstructed but a few were workable.

Here’s the Steel Samurai
Spoiler: Samurai
Image

Some of the colors seem a little off, is his face supposed to be blacked out in a few frames? And what is that … thing floating next to him right before the “water” shots. It seems to be off-colored, which is weird since it’s in the same palette area as the Samurai. Also I’m having the same problem with Lotta as I did with Payne, she’s just not there in the sheets, although the reporter and camera guy are, with like 4 frames between them.

New screens for Odrom:

I've got some Ichiru capped now but I'll update her tonight once I get some Zinc and Wakana to go with her. Also, Edgeworth bondage.

Ichiru Konomichi:

This one was a little weird; the sprites are stored in a 4bpp color format, this means each sprite can have a maximum of 15 distinct colors (1 for the background). The lead flight attendant only uses 14 of 15 colors while every other sprite I’ve worked on thus far uses all 15. I went through all of her poses and didn’t find anything off; regardless I left the final color a bright yellow so if you notice some errant, yellow-looking pixels in her sprite that’s the reason why. Feel free to point it out, even with a 400% zoom I haven’t found anything yet.

Wakana Shiraoto:

Croik, I need another shot of Wakana, preferably one where she’s swinging that doll around. There’s one color that isn’t shown in the pose you gave me, looking at the sample will explain it better. As before, I left the unknown color a bright yellow (you can see it on the outline of the doll). While I could just take a guess, like Manfred, I demand perfection with my work :karma: . Alternatively, we could estimate the color from her large-sprite counterpart or a different screenshot from a website (I’ve been unable to find one of the doll though).

No problems with Zinc.

No problems with his sprites at least. What a weirdo though.

Important update: I just heard from Invertigo! He said the sprite data is completely different than how they did AJ but he's already been able to pull a bunch of screenshots and is working on the sprites. As you can imagine this means I'm going to put off ripping more until I hear from him again as to whether he is able to get them.

Odrom I told him you were already doing the little ones, so if you don't mind continuing with those that would be awesome. I'll hurry through the rest of my playthrough to get you the screen caps you need (including a better shot of Wakana). Thanks again for all your help!
