THIS.

My sister's a vegetarian, though it's not entirely because she wants to stop eating meat or eat healthier(she eats junk food all the time). She just uses it as an excuse to get attention as well as an excuse for not eating dinner with us (if you know what I mean...).

I'm trying not to eat meat too much in my diet because it can be bad for you in the long run. I can live without eating beef and steak(unless it's in a Chipotle burrito XD) but I still like eating chicken. I'm also trying my best to stop eating pork, especially ham.

I've considered going vegetarian, but I don't like many fruits (and only a number of veggies).

Anyway, I like to think that humans are on the top of the food chain. And I assume that animals are killed a little more humanely in slaughterhouses rather than slowly being eaten alive/poisoned then digested alive/being ripped asunder etc.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Oh, and I apologize in advance if I offended anyone.

Anyway, I haven't eaten meat of any kind since I was old enough to express my distaste of it. It's partly that I don't personally like the idea of me eating an animal and partly that I've just never liked the taste of any sort of meat. However, I really consider myself to be unusual. Humans have always eaten meat. We're built for it. We're omnivores. Our bodies work best when we have a balance of different kinds of food.

I took a course about animals and their role in human history and learned a lot about how the relationships between us and our domesticates have changed and evolved over time. From what I learned, it seems to me that the whole vegan movement and animal rights movements are misguided. The issue is not with the eating of animals and using their products. Nothing could be more natural, more in line with the development of all species involved. People and animals have lived along side each other for tens of thousands of years, for the longest time in good balance with each other.

The problem I see is not with the eating of meat, but with the sheer quantity that it is done nowadays. People are accustomed to eating meat at nearly every meal, something that has not become common until the past century or so. And so this requires the production of meat to be ramped up as high as possible. This is where the mistreatment of animals comes in. The balance that was always struck before between the numbers of animals and numbers of humans eating them has been skewed drastically. And really that's where problems come in.

I could go on, but I don't really have a solution for this, and neither does anyone else. True there are movements of vegetarians or vegans trying to force their beliefs and behaviors onto others, but they are kidding themselves. People aren't going to give up eating meat, nor should they. If anything, it's the way the food industry as a whole, beyond just animals, that needs to be changed.

Please note I'm mostly talking about the phenomenon in the US, as that's what I'm most familiar with, though I know similar situations, on a smaller scale, exist around the world. If anyone is really interested in learning more about the food industry and the problems with the way we eat, I'd very strongly recommend The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, as well as In Defense of Food (same author). I didn't find the second one as interesting, but the first is an absolutely fascinating study of the American food industry.

And that's all I really have to say on this for now.

I have no issues with eating meat, though I come pretty close to being a vegetarian, since I rarely eat meat anyway. If I were to be a vegetarian, it would probably more so be a matter of my disliking the way meat tastes than my objecting to killing animals for food. My sister's a vegetarian, though; she became one as part of a deal with someone she knew and remains one now because she wants to be one rather than to keep her word--though the person she made the deal with didn't keep up her end of the deal.

Some animals are treated very well before being slaughtered, though I don't know how common that is these days now that factory farms have become common. Part of me is considering boycotting restaurants that get their meat from factory farms, though the issue would be finding out which restaurants do so--not to mention there are some places that I like too much to be able to believe beyond all doubt that I could successfully boycott them.

Regy Rusty has a point. As a society, we eat WAAAAAAAY too much meat.

I feel like I have no excuse not to practice vegetarianism, because I really enjoy the taste of vegetables. Besides that, I'm bad at cooking, so a salad made by me would be way more delicious than a dry chicken breast, for example.

It's really just a matter of me adapting to a new lifestyle. I buy most of my own groceries, so I'm gonna try adapting to soy milk. I don't like soy milk, so it'll be an acquired taste, but the idea of cow pus disgusts me. I don't really trust the dairy or meat industries.

I couldn't give up fish, though. I love my sardines and sushi way too much.

Also, why is everyone picking on Yaragorm? He's not doing anything wrong.

I've always found the argument of not eating meat because it's so cruel to animals a weird one, as animals have always eaten animals, and since we're omnivores, we're included in that too.

That said, the meat industry is a terrible strain on the world in general (a huge amount of energy goes in it and gets barely any worth back at all), and vegetarianism is a really good lifestyle.

Oat milk? I never heard of that before.

Now, I've tried rice milk before, and I liked it a lot better than soy milk. On the other hand, I'm certain that soy milk is more nutritious. I'm interested in the most nutritious milk, hopefully with a low sugar content. Cow milk has like, 11 grams of sugar per serving! What's the point of me buying healthy cereal if the milk has so much sugar in it?!

Yes, some of us know. Quinoa, for example, is on of the only grains in the world that has complete proteins. I personally think it's pretty tasty and like it a lot, but the taste and texture is kind of unusual; cooked quinoa is a little chewy and has a faint taste kind of like asparagus. Unfortunately, it's also much too expensive to eat with every meal. There's also companies that makes meatless food, like meatless chicken nuggets. The brand I tried was made out of a kind of fungus, which doesn't sound appealing--except they were better than actual chicken nuggets and they fooled my cat into thinking they were real. They were tender and chickeny and quite tasty. <3 It's a shame that it's so much more expensive to eat healthy than to eat junk food. There are still places in the world where it's cheaper to buy vegetables than fast food, but America is not one of them. :sadshoe:

Also, The Omnivore's Dilemma is uhmeyzing. It was really enjoyable and quite revealing. The author also co-produced the movie Food Inc. with Eric Schlosser, which was also uhmeyzing. I recommend both of them for omnivores and herbivores alike.

Seriously though, I've never understood vegetarians and vegans myself. I can understand not wanting to eat meat because it kills animals, but health wise, it's very unhealthy. Meat has many nutrients that we as humans need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and these veggies and fake meat products aren't going to provide the essentials that meat will give you.

I guess with me, I've just always been concerned with the fact if people are going vegetarian strictly because they feel it's the only way to lose weight/prevent themselves from getting fat. I dunno, it's just taking some of these health classes that I have been in college, I just really see no good point to it really myself. I don't have anything against the people who do it either, but I always thought a balanced diet with meat and veggies was so much better than strictly sticking with one or the other. I mean geez, we're omnivores by nature, not herbivores or carnivores, but whatever works for other people works I suppose.

The thing with tofu is that it tastes like whatever you put around it, so it's probably the meal that's disgusting, not the tofu.

I had a fried tofu meal from my local Chinese restaurant, and it was pretty good. I've also had it in enchiladas, along with soy cheese.

Actually, there are really good meat substitutes out there. Y'know, that actually taste somewhat like meat.

Tofu on its own is disgustingly bland, but it can be nice when it's in things. Soy milk...well, it's alright on cereal. I detest drinking it on its own, but then again, I detest regular milk, too--perhaps even more so.

Chocolate soy milk is delicious, though. :edgy:

I had the privilege of traveling to Japan earlier this year, and they have like a billion different types of tofu that you can get at the grocery store. Tofu is serious business.

And a lot of it tastes good by itself. You just slice it and eat it, maybe with a bit of soy sauce or sesame.

I only like tofu if it's in miso soup or mixed in with some other kind of dish. I made myself some fried tofu before, it wasn't too good :[ I first made it a way my friend's mom made it, which was just frying the tofu and then sprinkling a bunch of salt on it. Then I found another recipe, which was frying the tofu, then adding soy sauce, garlic, and corn syrup. It tasted much better, but there's something about the texture that I can't stand. Also, the dish tasted a lot better fresh because I had some the next day for school and it was disgusting. The texture was much worse. I also tried making agedashi dofu and it didn't turn out how I was hoping it would... :larry:

Soy milk is grody, but I do like vanilla soy with cheerios :D I also wanna try chocolate soy milk. Is it any good??
