Raw celery's ok sometimes, but cooked tastes BLECH. I use celery sometimes just for flavor in certain foods, but I always pick 'em out. They're too strong of a flavor. D:

I like cooked celery in soup, it adds a nice taste.

I've never seen it cooked haha. Whenever I need to add flavour I just add some carrots and then pick them out. c:

Apparently so. ;D

I don't really like peppers either. Although I don't mind them raw with ranch dressing. :3 But roasted red peppers look so... slimy to me. D:

I like raw celery, once again with ranch dressing. XD I don't mind celery in soups and such, though.

Aww yeah, I love raw peppers too haha.

Actually, I like anything raw!

What are some good vegetarian (or vegan~) snacks or foods that aren't basically fruits cooked or raw?

I don't really care for peppers, but I like the flavor. I hate that slimy texture.

So I made some spinach(I used the same ingredients I mentioned a little while ago) and some kimchi rice balls. I don't think the kimchi had any type of fish sauce in it, so I guess it counts as vegetarian. I didn't get a chance to eat any of it though. I ended up throwing it out because the smell began to permeate through my book bag and I figured I wouldn't have any time to eat it. It's a shame because the rice balls turned out really nice :larry: Hopefully the bathroom trash doesn't reek of garlic and kimchi!!

I like fruit leathers. That shit is the shit. You can find them at different grocery stores. Go for organic though. I also like toasted soy nuts. They're salted and are really crunchy and addicting :D Other than that, I don't really know except just to avoid snacks that have gelatin or milk...or something like that XD I would like to know about more vegetarian friendly snacks too.

Okay, I realize that broccoli is a vegetable, and that this particular snack isn't vegan (it IS vegetarian, though), but have you ever tried broccoli with ranch dressing? Not salad, just broccoli with a nice side of ranch. It's amazingly good--one of my favorite snacks.

I'd also suggest "ants on a log", as my parents called it when I was little--it's pretty much celery with peanut butter and raisins--but you mentioned that you hated celery, so that's out of the question.

As for non-vegetable snacks, if you can manage to acquire GOOD naan (Indian flatbread), that's a really nice snack. Just tear off a chunk and heat it in the microwave for about 5-10 seconds.

Also, have any of you guys ever tried Veganaise? It's vegan mayonnaise, and it tastes pretty much exactly like the real thing. And if I recall correctly, it doesn't spoil as easily, which is probably why my parents (who, like me, are ovo-lacto vegetarians) keep it in the house instead of regular mayonnaise.

I found a webpage with a ton of vegan snacks you can get from the supermarket. They're not all particularly healthy- in fact most of them are cookies or similar you can buy which are vegan, but since you were looking for non-vegetable/fruit thingys, these'd probably be good.

I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan, but one of my Teachers was a vegan and one very good friend of our family is a vegitarian. What I admire about our good vegetarian friend is that her daughter isn't a vegetarian, and she still cooks meat for her. I love it that she doesn't mind her daughter is an omnivore, and she will look at red meat without quivering.

The worst case of vegetarianism I've heard is at my birthday party (my 5th) a friends mum was there to supervise, and she was a veggie, as was her son, who was there. When he reached out for a sausage on a plate because veryone else was having some, his mother cried out,
"Don't, cristopher, they're dirty!!"
That was ridiculus, never liked her after that.

I don't raise my kid vegetarian, he's only 4 and he should make his own choices in life. I would say that someone raised vegetarian all their lives to try and eat meat after not for so long... it might not be a good thing.

While pregnant my iron count went extremely low, so I tried eating eggs again. It took a long time to accept eggs and even to this day I CAN NOT eat plain cooked eggs. I can eat eggs in a recipe, like cake or bread, but plain eggs cause a gag reflex every time and fun intestinal problems just like milk does to me, lol.. I don't like spending forever in the bathroom if I can help it.

I honestly can't see how people can live the vegan lifestyle. Vegetarian, yes. Vegan, no. I can't do either, but I probably couldn't go a day (or even just a few hours) as being a vegan before I eat something made with animal products.

I'd like to point out that plants and fungi are also living creatures. You basically starve them to death when you pluck them from their food source (or the ground for carrots, tubers, fungi, etc) Then you chop them up, mash them, toss them, fry them, steam them, it goes on and on. The only difference is that they don't have the same organ systems and don't bleed.

They also don't have any nerves or a brain to register pain or conciousness. It could be argued that plants and fungi could be alive in the same sense that a robot could be considered alive. They pretty much function automattically.

Also, does it make us monsters for ridding our bodies of parisites or single celled viruses and bacteria. (this was a sarcastic rhetorical question)

You're a fucking idiot. Plants and fungi are living creatures, but they aren't conscious.

They're not sentient beings. And can't feel pain.

Also, that's hypocrisy, unless you eat a 100% non-vegan diet, in which case you would be dead.

These attempts at trying to patronise vegetarianism and veganisms are horribly executed and make no sense at all. They are not satirising vegetarianism they are just proving to everyone that they are ignorant and likely failed middle school biology.

For one thing... fruits are meant to be fucking harvested. That's how some plants disperse their seeds, by getting animals to eat their fruits. Seeds are not digested and left whole in droppings. So when an animal who has eating fruit does his business, seeds can grow in that area. This is Grade 6 biology. Fruit-bearing plants are actually ENCOURAGING animals to eat their fruit. Anyone who tries to argue this fact even satirically is an idiot. Please take at least one class of biology before trying to argue.

Secondly for vegetables, at catgrenade said, can't feel any pain as they are being harvested. Animals feel the pain of being slaughtered. We are animals, we can relate to this, cuts hurt. Tiny paper cuts hurt like hell. Imagine getting slaughtered.

Thirdly, plants being grown for agriculture aren't abused like animals in farms.

Yaragorm wrote:

Yaragorm...

sigh. She's not referring to the pain of being eaten. By the time you're being eaten, you're surely dead. Plant, funghi or animal. She's referring to the pain and cruelty these animals must go through in farms, she's referring to the pain they feel when they are slaughtered. Even free-range farms don't treat their animals ideally.

And as a note, neoswordmaster, viruses are non-living. Furthermore, they can never be single-celled or even multicelullar. ;)

Just to say again, I'm not vegetarian, and I'm not chastisizing people for eating meat (that would just be hypocritical) I just think some of these arguements are, frankly speaking, retarded.

-- I saw your sarcasm, I just wanted to correct you on that.

I was wondering, does anyone have any specific reasons for becoming vegetarian/vegan? Did you not like the taste of meat? Were you against animal cruelty? Was it due to the health benefits? Were you raised like a vegetarian?
