Yeah... after being around long enough seeing Japanese products, you learn quickly that even "official" products often can't seem to pick a romanization and stick with it. I wouldn't place too much faith in anything that doesn't come directly out of the artist's mouth... and even then, the artists aren't always known for picking romanizations that would seem obvious to English-speakers. Butz

As for everybody above who insists that they will always call him "GO-dot" (like "robot")... you remind me of a young me. When I was 13 years old, I swore up and down that there was a character in Ranma 1/2 named "Rye-oh-guh" (Ryoga). Even after being corrected by a person who had recently graduated college with a degree in Japanese that it was called "ReeOH-ga".

Now, however, I've learned that when there is a "right" pronunciation, there IS a "right" pronunciation. There's no point in being stubborn in what *you* think "sounds better". "Godot" isn't one of those words that has more than one right way to say it (e.g. tomato, or differences in American and British English.) When I learned that intentionally mispronouncing something out of stubbornness does nothing more than display my own ignorance to people who know better, I stopped. Redd White

Honestly, everybody is free to do as they wish, of course, and if people want to call New York "Naw Yirk" because they think it sounds cooler, it's their prerogative. Alternately, if they insist on loudly pronouncing the "p" at the beginning of the word "phrase", because hey, that's how it's spelled, they're welcome to do that also. Just know that it's considered stubborn ignorance for the most part, moreso than voicing a preference. I know, because I've been the stubborn one before. Javado

EDIT: Of course, that doesn't mean you have to pretend you're Japanese, or even French, when you say it. No need to be the newscaster pronouncing "Guatemala" in the perfect Spanish accent (WATEMALA or something). I don't know how to properly pronounce French any more than the next guy, but I believe the accepted pronunciation in English of the the French name "Godot" is "guhDOUGH" thereabouts. That's not hard to pronounce by any means.

(HOWEVER. According to this site, the accepted American pronunciation is not correct either. Funny how that works, isn't it? Beckett says to emphasize the first syllable (GOdough)... however it's far too late to tell that to Capcom, the Japanese creators of the game seemingly tried to emulate the American pronunciation, according to the kana. *sigh* What tangled webs we weave.)

It's easier just to pronounce it like it's french, because funnily enough it's a french name! It's like pronouncing puree (pure-ay) as pure-ee. XD

I always pronounced it with a silent T for the same reason. I was surprised when I went to his character page on CR and that wasn't his name origin.

It's Goh-doh, but I've always pronounced it Goh-dot. It's because that's how I automatically read "Godot" in my head. If I want to pronounce it Goh-doh, I have to read it twice.

I used to pronounce it as "Go-Dott", until one incredibly intelligent and well-read classmate of mine corrected me and said it was "Go-Doh". Damn I didn't even know how to pronounce French names back then.

My dad always used to tell me about a play called "Waiting for Godot". I only HEARD the name of the play, so I never would have guessed that it was spelled like that. Years later, I played Trials and Tribulations, and I called the prosecutor Go-dott. Why? Because it's more fitting! Look at him! Does he look like a Guh-dough or a Go-dott? He wears this cybermask, so I pronounced it Go-dott because of the word Robot!
And about two minutes later, I READ that it was a reference to a play called "Waiting for Godot", and I knew you pronounced the name in the title Guh-dough, so I thought "Crap, I've always been pronouncing it the wrong way!"

/ˈɡɒdoʊ/

EDIT: Woo, 64th post. Nice number.

The ignorant ones are those who couldn't be bothered to look at the timestamps. And, to an extent, those who pronounce his name incorrectly. This topic is over. The correct answer was given two years ago. This thread should be locked.

So, I've been pronouncing his name wrong through out the whole game of Trials and Tribualtions all this time..... :payne:

I thought it was Godot with a T but it is pronounced with a silent T. :meekins: And it sounded like my younger brother's nickname no less. :yuusaku:

I always pronounced it with the T. I even thought it was right. I found out it was Go-doh when I came here, but I still pronounce it GodoT. It just sounds weird and it's hard to say without the T for me.

I always pronounced it as Go-doh, primarily because I always thought that his name cane from DieGO ArmanDO. I'm sure it's with a silent T, but I'm not quite sure about the rest.
I've been away for far too long.
So long, in fact, that all of my signatures now exist behind a paywall.
Bummer.
