The first trailer for Ace Attorney 6 is here! It will be updated shortly with subs. As expected, it confirms a 2016 release date.

Update: Subs have been added!

The trailer reveals the game to take place in the "Kingdom of Kurain". The mysterious girl is its "mystic princess", Leifa Padma Kurain. The trials here use mediums to show what the victim felt and saw in their final moments, and as such see no need for defense attorneys. In spite of that, Phoenix vows to fight for his clients!

[The Court-Records 2015 OC Contest is now running. Come win stuff!]

That shot of Nick running into the courtroom is pretty nice and dynamic looking, and woah-she's dancing.

This was awesome-and I'm double happy for it coming stateside.

The country is "Kingdom of Kurain". Whether or not it has to do with the Feys is yet to be seen...

But wtf, man. Why has Payne tailed Phoenix to Tibet? Can't he do something else other than stalk defense attorneys?

Also, wth, is it me or is something wrong with Phoenix's animations? They look a little rough for a preview.

Edit: Btw, the new mechanic is called "Spirit Vision". We see the victim's last memories in the Water Mirror.

As we suspected, the girl is the country's oracle princess. She is in charge of revealing visions of the recently departed. Her name is Leifa Padma Kurain.

Did Phoenix get a new VA? He sounds so serious! I did like the way the models looked, although the game still looks pretty rough around the edges. No wonder they're going for 2016 as a release date. Still though, as if we didn't already have enough Maya hype, now they're throwing around Kurain references. It will be the cruelest twist ever if she actually doesn't show up.

With spirit mediums... does it mean that we may see the return of Maya and Pearl in this game? Just wondering.

DGS TEAM: "Well, guys, Phoenix in the original series relied on a lot of magic and whatnot to solve his cases. Edgeworth also had a lot of deus ex machina moments as far as logic goes. So, let's have Ryu solve most of his problems on his own. Guilty verdict? Well, he can try to win over the jury. We'll even have the investigation segments be more interesting with Joint Reasoning!"

AA6: "ALRIGHT, MOTHERFUCKERS, I HEARD YOU LIKE FUCKING MAGIC. BOOM, LOOK AT THE POOL, CAN YOU SEE THE VICTIM? I SURE CAN. I ALSO HEARD YOU LIKE SMOOTH ANIMATIONS, SO WE GOT RID OF THOSE. THIS COUNTRY ALSO HAS NO DEFENSE ATTORNEYS BECAUSE PHOENIX NEEDS TO HAVE A REASON TO- I MEAN THE DARK AGE OF THE LAW... OOOH SPOOKY!"

It is a little over-the-top that they're now introducing an entire Kurain country, true. It fits in very well with Yamazaki's preferences for writing (large-scale crises, dramatic settings.)

As always, I'll wait until the game comes out before I totally judge it. But I would be lying if I said it wasn't a bit off-putting.

That said, I did like the brief shot of Phoenix running into the courtroom. Even if they're sticking to more "jerky" animations for the characters, I hope they start using the 3D space more like DGS did.

I have to admit, that magical pool thingy looks pretty interesting. I like the idea of showing the victim's death, it could lead to some interesting possibilities. I wonder if they're going to present it as legitimate like the Kurain Channeling Technique is in series or if there is some kind of trick to the magic like in PL vs AA.
Man I can't wait for Maya to get accused of murder again by a magical pool of water.

Looks like they've redone (as in not reusing) the animations from AA5. If that's the case, they are probably just unfinished. It is a demo of a game "30%" done after all, and I'd imagine animation and scripts would be the majority of the overall development percentage at this stage. Or they've run into projected space limitations if they are using the 3D space more (each animation set costing a chunk of storage on a cart and system storage for downloads).

Although honestly they didn't look bad to me. Maybe not just as fluid? Actually, watching it again, it looks like interpolation might be absent for some types of animation? That'd certainly explain it, and it wouldn't be something you'd worry about for an expo demo.

^ My thoughts exactly. It looks like they rushed everything to get it released just so they get to show off some of their new stuff. Granted, with Kondo returning, they didn't have much to worry about regarding Phoenix's voice.

So, who is voicing the new girl? I'd say she sounds familiar, but my knowledge of VAs in general is terribly lacking.

This is a deeply ominous trailer in several ways (TaT's Objection, once Phoenix's best, continues to only get worse in rearrangement, the way a country that doesn't even have defense attorneys builds defense benches is exactly the sort of arch garbage Yamazaki indulges in far too often, the country being named the Kingdom of Kurain is a disastrous overreach from a team which, when overreaching, makes some of the worst things in the series, and the princess' name is downright disgustingly bad), but I'm still excited. It's still Ace Attorney, and there's plenty of things specifically intriguing about this trailer, I think the designs look generally strong, the new mechanic seems fascinating, the seemingly in-engine cutscenes are exciting. But I would say this is a bad trailer.

First off, I saw this game's Payne as well in the trailer, and I have several questions. Mainly, if it's not Gaspen or Winston, then who is he? :ron:

My mood in regards to this game is best described as cautiously optimistic. My main concern, like a lot of other people, is in wondering if we’re going to see people from Dual Destinies again, and if they plan to address the threads from Apollo Justice.

Beyond that I really liked what I saw in the trailer! The Spirit Vision mechanic fascinated me, and I was intrigued by Padma Kurain. She seems to have a unique speech bubble, which is usually indicative of the rival character (see Simon Blackquill and Judge Courtney).

And speaking of our Princess, they're going crazy with the Maya teasing. You guys noted that the Kingdom of Kurain isn't the same as the one we all know, but the similarities are uncanny.

Those are my initial thoughts, at any rate.

(Wow... 3 comments in the time it took me to write this one...)

I should reserve my opinions until after I play the game, but after seeing DGS, and the hype around that, it's 3D model's moddeling, animations and rigging improvements surpassing DD's, going back to the sprite-esque styled animations feels weird XD

I wish they showed off some new Music. I used to love T&T's Objection theme, now it's been so overused in trailers that even though this rendition's amazing it's not something I'd sit and watch on repeat 20+ times like other trailers.

Please don't throw out all the charm that Takumi built up for gimmicks... DD was fine, and I ended up liking it a lot over time, but this at the moment feels less like Takumi's semi-impossible yet still completely comphrehensible scenarios and relatable characters. Now it feels like the Layton games where most non-major characters have no personality that lasts.

Excuse me, but is there any Kanji/Japanese spelling of Kurain Channeling Technique for Maya's place? Like in this country, it's spelled with Katakana...but i heard that Kurain from Maya, is spelled using Kanji?

Also.....it seems they really left Apollo and Athena in Japanifornia. Capcom better not forgetting them... :dahlia:

Yeah. To be clear, this country's name is spelled クライン in katakana, while Kurain Village's "Kurain" was 倉院。

Clearly, they're meant to be two different places, but now I can't help but imagine that this "Kurain" might have an urn that's a little more like this. In a way, the physical impossibility of such a design could be symbolic of how spirituality is viewed by these people, in the way of how spirits are held by no boundaries.

Eh..not completely sold but I'll keep an open mind. This is probably the last I'll watch of AA6 news

Phoenix's VA is pretty good. And I laughed pretty hard when I saw Payne at the Prosecutor's bench (but if the country doesn't need defense attorneys, why have a prosecutor?)

But if Payne can travel to Kurain, so can other cast members :p

Again, during the first 6 months of AA5 advertizing they didn't show a single frame of Apollo, yet he played a big role in the final game. Just wait and see.

Couldn't we have gotten something new? I was fine with DD's being a remix of T&T's (a theme I didn't like, but liked the remix of) but now they're remixing a remix? Boooooo

I am sure we will get something new. After all even AA5 brought us a new Objection theme in the end (Athena's).

Welp, "3-day trials where almost all defendants are proclaimed guilty aren't urgent enough and we weren't creative enough to think of a new Japanese rival for Nick, so we're moving him to a country that doesn't even have attorneys so he can single-handedly revolutionize their court system to make it more fair even though that's basically just bypassing the country's entire government and autonomy, and it means the prosecutor-rival-whoever will have not had any experience facing off against defense attorneys whereas Nick is an attorney legend, and Nick is going to start off as the best attorney in the country by virtue of being the only attorney in the country" looks like it's going to end up as stupid as it sounded.

I do like the mirror, though. Considering what it does, I'm hoping it'll lead to some nice mysteries.

tl;dr: the plot looks like utter trash, hopeful about everything else (and i'll forgive the overarching plot if the individual case mysteries are okay)

Well, I'm guessing he more means the premise. "Phoenix Wright gonna revolutionize the country!" It personally doesn't bother me, but I can see where other people are coming from...

So like it has already been pointed out, yeah, this seems sort of like a rushed trailer, but to be honest I wasn't feeling AAI2 at all, and I felt it looked much worse than AAI, except it turned out it had a pretty decent plot. That's the same vibe I'm getting here, and if it goes like DD, this is the final animations, and this is the final music. And speaking of music.

That's where even if it may be rushed, it just strikes me as completely lazy, how they took the DD theme, transposed it half a note, changed the instrumentation sound font and slapped an alternative coda in there. That did not get me hyped at all, and it also further shows how it may be rushed since there was just the objection 2016 theme and just that.

With DD I was very excited and then less so and less so as more info was revealed. I'm hoping this is the opposite, because right now, I'm actually not too excited for it.

Honestly at this point I don't know what to think. The direction Yamazaki wants the series to take is abundantly clear now, from the trailer as well as the comments on the video. People want Phoenix, Maya, Edgeworth, sprites; basically a reboot of the original trilogy, and Capcom knows it. Having Phoenix be the main character, setting the game in "Kurain", all the allusions to Maya; it's almost pandering at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if Gumshoe and Iris came back too. I hope that eventually people realize that in the end seeing these characters on screen written by entirely different people is no substitute for the original series.
As many people have pointed out, the plot seems very contrived at first glance (I still can't get over the fact that there's an empty bench in the courtroom that has literally no purpose whatsoever other than to have Phoenix conveniently rush in and take the spot). As far as music goes, this is probably the worst objection theme in the series, assuming this is the main objection theme. I wasn't fond of the DD rendition and this is even worse.
I'll admit, the water mirror looks promising, and is probably the only thing I'm looking forward to (though wouldn't it be more convenient to outright channel the victim? I think that would be a lot more interesting personally...)
I'll sum up by saying that I'm somewhere between negative and skeptical (obligatory: "but I'll wait until the game comes out before I judge")

So basically what we suspected is confirmed and we got some names we can use instead of 'mysterious girl' and 'this country that looks like Tibet'. Also, Payne confirmed! Who needs Maya, Apollo or Athena? We have Payne.

But really, if Maya isn't in the game, it'll be downright cruel.

And I still say this is the birthplace of Ami Fey.

Heh, an amusing thought, but I hope this is just Kurainese (guessing that's the adjective for this country?) Payne. I am actually kinda liking the tradition now to just have Payne (or a version of Payne) for the first trial in every game. Even if it just doesn't make sense...

Rubia Ryu the Royal wrote:

Hm, I looked over the trailer again, and I don't exactly see it. They animations look a bit, uh, choppy probably to replicate that sprite feel. It's a different direction than what DGS did, but I can't say it's bad or anything. (That said, I think I prefer the smoothness of what I've seen of DGS.)

This, I think is really cool. I really really hope it'll get utilized well, because it can completely make or break the game. The Mood Matrix sounded very cool at first too, but it kinda broke DD for me.

Still though, as if we didn't already have enough Maya hype, now they're throwing around Kurain references. It will be the cruelest twist ever if she actually doesn't show up.

Right? She just HAS to show up. If she doesn't, then... then... Well, ultimately I won't do anything like burn down Capcom or something... But man, I'd be so disappointed. Almost heart-broken, really.

With spirit mediums... does it mean that we may see the return of Maya and Pearl in this game? Just wondering.

I'm actually interested to see Iris more than Pearl, really. I am one of the few (or rather, it feels like there are only few) people who liked Iris. I don't necessarily want Iris to return just to see her get hooked up with Phoenix, but rather to give Iris a bit more substance and depth. Of course it'll be interesting to see what will happen exactly between Phoenix and Iris if she does show up.

Right, I can definitely see this. And I can see why it bothers a lot of people. Truth be told, I am not 100% comfortable with it either. But ultimately, a grand premise doesn't deter too much from the experience for me. It all depends on the individual cases for me. The game can have a grand premise and thus give the cases that context, but if the case itself is still something spectacular on its own (or sometimes, when tied to other cases) I don't see it as something too different from a great case in the original trilogy.

I really think it's something legitimate. This is not a crossover, and it's definitely not Professor Layton, where almost everything mystical has to be explained in a convoluted yet "real" way. And as you mentioned, the Kurain Channeling Technique is something real in the canon series, I can only imagine this mirror (or at least the powers behind it) is as real as can be.

Hm, I can see what you mean, I think. You're worried that Phoenix will be too central and too important that all the focus will be on him, meaning all other characters will suffer in both depth and development. It's a legitimate concern, though I don't know how this game exactly already feels like it's like this.

Oh, I guess I don't mind the Objection theme but...c'mon

Couldn't we have gotten something new? I was fine with DD's being a remix of T&T's (a theme I didn't like, but liked the remix of) but now they're remixing a remix? Boooooo

Yeah, I agree with this. I actually DO like the Objection theme (as opposed to some other people here, it seems) but I really would've liked a different objection theme much like the trilogy had a different theme for each game. I 'allowed' it in DD because of the three attorneys and they had to have a theme that was distinctly Phoenix, distinctly Apollo and distinctly Athena (which was easy, since Athena is a new character so any new objection theme would then be her distinct theme).

Truth be told, I hope that means they won't play a big role in this game. I actually really like Apollo (Athena a bit less) but I just think two attorneys is a bit much, let alone three! One attorney + assistant has always been perfect for me. (And no, if the assistant is an attorney and plays an attorney later in the game, I can't completely see them as just an assistant.)

I definitely hope you're right. I really liked what I see, but of course I'm not blind and I can see a lot of room for improvement. If they improve on what I've already seen, then dang, it'll be a really really good game!

Hm, I do want to see some returning characters, true... And I won't deny I want Maya for nostalgia reasons. However, I wouldn't immediately consider it pandering if they oblige. If characters return in a meaningful way (read: not like Pearl), then I am all for it. For example, I actually do think it's possible to bring back Iris in a meaningful way here, and it's what I am hoping for. (Obviously not getting my hopes up too high, though!) Gumshoe? Yeah, that probably would be a bit of a weird one to return at this point.

As many people have pointed out, the plot seems very contrived at first glance (I still can't get over the fact that there's an empty bench in the courtroom that has literally no purpose whatsoever other than to have Phoenix conveniently rush in and take the spot).

I know I will sound like an eternal optimist now, but there might actually be a reason there is a bench there. People have actually speculated that defense attorneys were a thing in the past (they do know the term, after all) and that they were simply deemed obsolete due to the "absolute truth" the mirror provided. They simply didn't feel it necessary to redesign the court. (I imagine that if they were to build a NEW court they'd leave out the defense bench, though.)

Zekrom025 wrote:
(though wouldn't it be more convenient to outright channel the victim? I think that would be a lot more interesting personally...)

Hm, well, consider that Ami Fey created the Channeling Technique in this country and took it with her to... er, Japanifornia. This means that people in the Kingdom of Kurain do have the spirit powers, but NOT the technique, which means they have to rely on this mirror, which is the 'technique' they (or at least, the Oracle Princess) developed without Ami.

I'd rather have them in the larger role than anything with Phoenix. He's just dead weight to the series by now. But come on, we can't have just sit through all of DD's building up Athena to sideline her in the next game. And Apollo is too big a character to not get SOME token bit of character development like in DD. I know I have low expectations for AA6 but I really, really would like to think that it won't be THAT ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure if we had a court session in space, even there there would be a Payne to go against.

True enough. I personally would've liked to see Apollo in the spotlight rather than Phoenix, though I really wouldn't call Phoenix dead weight. Would it have been a good decision to have Phoenix's story end with the trilogy? Yes. Is it necessarily a bad decision to keep Phoenix going after the trilogy? No.
I think it's still possible to do interesting things with Phoenix. And in fact, I think he was interesting in AA4 (even if he pulled the plot to himself at times). AA5? Less so. But I don't think he was a bad character to just simply act as an avatar for the player.

As for Athena. Well, I am biased. But I would be happy if her story is done and over with at this point. She had her build-up in DD, definitely, but she also had all her resolutions too, so having her be less plot-centric wouldn't actually leave things unresolved. Apollo, on the other hand...
