He hits someone with his car, and kills them. Sure, he might have gone insane after realizing he killed someone and that his life was screwed over, but to go and kill every witness (5, in fact) that meticulously, so that there were no fingerprints, cells, hair fibers left over, etc. etc. is going past the heat of the moment/insanity. Unless Darke's ancestor was an assassin, and that side of his personality showed up only when he was in severe danger. But, yeah, I am thankful for a couple that Darke did. He created the entire storyline for 1-5, and for that, I love him.
Whoever said nothing was impossible obviously never tried to close a revolving door.

He was mentally unstable though, and he was still framed plus remember he didn't murder Ema anyway. Partially due to his own actions in attempting to turn himself in where there are plenty of Lawmen and women to stop him. If he'd wanted to get away with it he wouldn't have picked a murder scene in the middle of the police station he'd probably just stab someone on the street.

With a name like Darke
could we really expect more? I'd say this problem comes down to a writing fault, the way Darke's life ends, with the desperate forging of evidence and framing makes him look more innocent as it's a miracle that he left absolutely no evidence....then again if they did have evidence they'd simply put him away like that and it wouldn't make for an interesting case later on

So... if you were feeling sympathy for him because he seemed to show regret? Forget it. He obviously didn't want to come in but played it cool till Neil (or Gant, though Gant attributes it to Neil) pressed him a bit too hard and he panicked and ran off.
His actions were also entirely nonsensically excessive. An accident resulted in several intentional homicides. He killed people to hide an accident. On the loony scale that's just below Kristoph, who similarly killed people for his self image, but who did it for even less of a reason and who did it much more deliberately.

Of course, this is all conjecture. There wasn't a single shred of evidence. So, he turned himself in... Yes, but in the middle of his questioning, he fled and murdered his final victim...See, this is simply an issue of a Contradiction with the facts. Incidentally, your own facts have a grave error: One says he was taken in, the other says he was asked to come in... Not ordered, but simply asked.

I knew Darke wasn't as sinister as that.....however it's now confirmed that he is a child killer I feel sorry for him now knowing that he'd probably get an insanity verdict instead of getting murdered had he went to court.

Thank you for pointing out that quote. Unfortunately, I'd suppose that there are three possibilities: a) there was an error in the translation of that line by Gumshoe, b) that's an outright error/contradiction in the text, also existent in the Japanese version, or c) Gumshoe misunderstood what went on, especially since he had nothing to do with the actual case. While these are all probable, I'd say that since it is in canon anyway, trusting not only a) the words of an investigator of the case instead of someone unrelated to the case and b) trusting what the majority of people say is most accurate.
Here's another line:
Edgeworth: Joe Darke was brought in for questioning on the day of that ceremony.
I don't take what Ema says to be in contradiction with what Lana says: Darke was taken in for questioning. He was taken in willingly, meaning he was asked and he consented to it; it was voluntary. There's no contradiction there.
